Obituary for Grace Janet Dickson (Degn)
February 16, 1930 to November 4, 2020
Gracie, as she was known to her friends, passed quietly in her sleep on November 4, 2020 at the age of 90. She is survived by her sons, Rick and Ron and their wives Deb Bridge and Wendy Wisman in Calgary; two grandsons, Michael Bridge-Dickson of Montreal and Thor Wisman (Sandra) of Calgary; and one great-grand-daughter, Ivy Wisman. Grace also leaves a sister, Helen Cameron and her husband Donald of Montreal; a brother, Peter Degn of Ottawa; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Richard in 2015, to whom she was married for 68 years.
Grace loved to knit and crochet and gifted many of her afghans and other items to friends and family. She and Richard were known in the purebred dog community in Calgary and beyond as successful breeders of Irish and English setters for many years; although a number of their dogs won prestigious placings, the Best in Show they’d hoped to win eluded them.
If you knew Grace, you know she loved bingo and playing the slots at the casino, but her favourite form of gambling was buying weekly lottery tickets, especially the Western 649 and Lotto Max. She never won big, but that didn’t prevent her from continuing to buy tickets. She also loved Push Rummy, and it was a running joke in the family that she loved to cheat at it.
Grace was known and loved by many and always enjoyed a good laugh. Mom, say hi to Dad and all those who’ve gone before. We all love you and will be together again someday.
Instead of a funeral service, there will be a celebration of Grace’s life after COVID restrictions on large gatherings are lifted
In lieu of flowers, a donation to The Calgary Food Bank or The Royal Canadian Legion in Grace’s name would be appreciated.
