Obituary for Gladys Sylvia Cookson (Reimer)

Gladys Sylvia Cookson (nee Reimer) of Calgary, Alberta passed peacefully into the presence of Jesus on Sunday, July 5th, 2020. She will be missed by her family, including her sister-in-law, Betty-Ruth (preceded by Harvey) Reimer; niece, Cheryl (Andrew) Wright; niece, Heather Osmond; nephew, Greg (Gonda) Reimer; great nephews and nieces, Jared (Katie), Bretton, Joel, Dawson, Jonny, Evangeline, Ethan, Avalon and Miriam. She was affectionately known by all who loved her as Auntie Glad.
Gladys was born in Regina as the middle daughter between two brothers, Larry and Harvey. Recollections of her youth included her father lovingly calling her “Skipper”, her parents’ home filled with guests and friendships which she maintained her entire lifetime. She was a talented musician and played piano and organ in her church starting from the young age of 13. As a young adult, Gladys held several jobs, varying from a personal shopper at Eaton’s to managing medical offices. She moved to Vancouver while working with Imperial Oil and then back to Regina in her thirties, to support her family after the passing of her father. This change in career and location led her to meet her husband Arthur Cookson, Chief of Police for the City of Regina, while working at City Hall.
Gladys’ marriage to Arthur, in 1964, was filled with travel, adventure and entertaining many who visited their home. This dynamic couple were generous with friendship and gracious hosts to many gatherings in Regina and continued during their retirement in Calgary. Soon after Arthur passed away in 1994, Gladys’ family migrated to Calgary from Ontario. Her role as “Auntie Glad” increased as she was cheerleader and confident to her brother, Harvey’s, adult, family.
During the past 26 years, Auntie Glad continued to share her life by supporting many in friendship through heartfelt phone conversations with those near and dear to her. She will be remembered and missed for her prayer, encouragement and loving, intuitive guidance. Her tiny 4’11” frame held her formidable personality and a wealth of wisdom that she used serving in her lifelong relationship with her Lord, Jesus. She had a quick-witted quip for any circumstance and remained a centerpiece of her family here in Calgary. She leaves a huge hole in our hearts and each of us would love to offer our arm in escort just one more time to be able to hear her distinct voice say, “Love you too.”
