Paquette, Gabriel Joseph

Gabriel Joseph Paquette, loving husband, father of 4, grandfather of 6, great grandfather of 16 and great great grandfather of 1, passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020 at 84 years of age.

Gabe was well known for his love of family, animals, playing cards and having a good laugh. During his life he was a farmer, machinist, carpenter, mail carrier, animal care worker and general jack of all trades. His proudest accomplishment was retiring at 55 to become a homesteader. He built his farm from scratch on a quarter section between Ponoka and Rimbey, AB and raised cattle, pigs, horses, dogs and cats. He enjoyed the wildlife that passed through his piece of paradise.

Gabe was born on September 24, 1935 to Adrian and Lucia (Dumontier) Paquette in Watson, SK. He will be missed by his loving wife of 62 years, Sylvia (McAreavy); children, Audrey (Roderick) Bley, Tim (Cori), Tom (Shirley Johnson) and Cathy (Ed Spohn); brothers, Ted of Threehills, AB, Adrian (Olga) of Coldstream, BC and Andrew (MaryAnne) of Camrose, AB; sister-in-law, Shirley of Calgary and many loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family.

Our thanks to the staff of Carewest George Boyack where Gabe resided during the last few months. Gabriel will be cremated in Calgary by Choice Memorial Cremation & Funeral Services. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gabe’s memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation or to any animal conservation society of your choice.

Our sincere condolences to the entire family. Gabe was a character and had a hearty laugh and a great spirit in fact I can hear him and my Mom Isabelle ( his sister) right now having a great laugh while playing crib! My memories go back to the time of Sylvia and Gabe's farm north of Calgary when he had mink and I remember being fascinated by seeing them and everything else that happened on the farm. I know being on the land there and in the Ponoka area gave him great satisfaction and peace and I will always have those memories too. He is at peace.

My favorite memory of Uncle Gabe happened in the mid 60's . There was a auction in downtown Calgary that sold everything and anything including livestock every Saturday. Gabe and my father Oscar were regular patrons and I loved to go .
I still chuckle to this day remembering Gabe buying a calf for 50 cents. He had his car with him but no problem. He just ripped the back seat out put it in the trunk and loaded that calf where the seat was.
Well he had a long way to get home and I imagine by the time he got there the car would have been pretty ripe.
There I just had another good laugh and another good memory.
Gabe I hope you're back on the farm with all your critters doing what you loved most.

Remembering you
Your nephew
