Obituary for Francis J. O'Dwyer

Francis “Frank” Joseph O’Dwyer

It is with sadness that the family of Francis O’Dwyer announces his passing on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at the age of 93. Frank was born to Jack and Teresa O’Dwyer in Drumheller, the third son of a large mining family. Frank loved music, telling stories and being the center of attention. He would put these skills to good use as a music teacher and Principal with Edmonton Catholic Schools. His faith was very important to him and he was happy to serve his parish as both Music director and 4th degree Knight of Columbus. Frank loved to golf and was President, then an executive board member with the Belvedere Golf and Country club. His beautiful tenor singing voice rang out proudly with the Welsh men’s choir.

Frank married Denise in 1954 and together they had three children, Elaine (Rick), Kevin (Louann), and Margaret (Richard). The lineage continued with six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Frank and Denise had many friends and a very active social life. Their four table bridge group was at the center of every New Year celebration. There was never a week without guests at the dinner table. The couple also loved to travel; trips to Hawaii, a special 25th wedding anniversary vacation to Greece and the Mediterranean were the most memorable. The large family also got together to share stories, song and laughter, these times were most precious to Frank. St. Patrick’s Day was a fitting end to this truly Irish man’s vibrant life.

Frank is survived by his children, Kevin (Louann), Margaret (Richard); son in law, Rick; his grandchildren, Matthew (Meghan), Gregory (Michelle), Shaelynn, Sean, Nicholas, and Jeannine, and his great grandson, Hugo. He is also survived by his brother, Don; sisters, Teresa and Dorothy (Jim); sisters in law, Oriole, Olivine, Lorraine, and Ruth as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Denise; daughter, Elaine; sisters, Helen (Sandy) and Leoba (Jack); brothers, Arthur (Mary), William, Harold and Gerald; sisters in law, Elaine and Claire; brothers in law, Bob, Dan, Albert (Leah), and Edwin.
