Obituary for Ferdinand Friedrich Hornung

Ferdinand Friedrich Hornung
October 31, 1937 – February 17, 2021

Ferdinand (Fred) Hornung passed away peacefully at his home in Calgary on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 at the age of 83 surrounded by the family that was his greatest joy in life.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 58 years, Jutta; his children, Robert (Ellen) and Susan (David), as well as his grandchildren, Rachel and Jeremy, and William and Austin.

Ferdinand was born in Berlin, Germany and endured many challenges in his childhood associated with war and its aftermath. As he got older, he became a professional stonemason, an accomplished athlete (badminton), and started his lifelong love for travel with extended cycling trips through Germany.

In 1957, at the age of 19, he made the decision to visit a friend in Calgary and ended up deciding to stay to pursue new opportunities in a beautiful new country he would always be proud to call home. He shifted his career focus to steel fabrication, starting on the shop floor and ultimately becoming a manager and supervisor of major construction projects in the oilsands and overseas in South America and Southeast Asia before retiring in 2007.

Ferdinand met Jutta in 1959 in Calgary and their relationship and the family that resulted from it would be his primary focus for the rest of his life. He was a loving husband and father who worked incredibly hard both on the job and at home to ensure his family had opportunities he had not had.

Ferdinand was a compassionate and gentle man who was always there to help his family and the strong network of friends he and Jutta developed and maintained for many decades. His endless sense of curiosity made him a lifelong learner, his handyman skills were unparalleled, and he approached any issue with a strong dose of common sense.

The last year was challenging for Ferdinand as he bravely wrestled with several health issues, always striving to make “the best of it”, as he did throughout his life. Starting with very little, he was able to build and leave behind a legacy of which he and his family are justifiably proud.

Due to COVID restrictions, a Celebration of Fred’s Life with family and friends will take place at a future date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ferdinand’s memory to Canadian Cancer Society.
