Obituary for Ellen Alberta Smith (Noseworthy)

Ellen Alberta Smith
With great sadness the family of Ellen Alberta Smith (Noseworthy) announce that she passed peacefully at the Colonel Belcher Long Term Center in Calgary, AB on Tuesday, November 10, 2020 at the age of 84.

Mom will be missed & lovingly remembered by her sons, Jim (Sandra) of Calgary, AB, Carl (Tracy) of Kentville, NS and Albert (Kath) of Fort St. John, BC; daughter, Holly (Brian) White of Grande Prairie, AB; her sixteen grandchildren and great grandchildren; brothers Stephen (June) of Ontario, Maxwell (Linda) of Calgary, AB, Albert (Margaret) of Corner Brook, NL, Wayne of Corner Brook, NL and Randy (Mary) Edmonton, AB; and her sisters, Sophie (Joe) Newman of Bonne Bay Pond, NL, Linda (Marcus) Maloney of Curling, NL and Nada (Steve) Sooley of Kelligrews, NL. Ellen was predeceased by husband, Laurance; son, Larry; brother, Edwin Noseworthy; sisters, Elizabeth Mary Chiasson, Louise Staples & her husband Syd; parents, Albert & Sophie and stepmother, Lucy.

Our Mom was born on the east coast of Newfoundland in Brookfield on Bonavista Bay. At 16, she moved to the west coast of Newfoundland where she lived in Corner Brook & Stephenville. A few years were spent in the United States & New Brunswick but Stephenville was home for most of our Mom’s adult life. She came to Alberta in 2011 to be closer to her children, after the passing of our Dad. Mom battled Alzheimer’s for most of the time she was in Alberta.

Ellen was an avid card player, reader, walker & quite enjoyed a good Newfoundland party with music & dancing. One of her great joys was spending time with her grandkids & later her great grandchildren. She never missed a graduation or wedding if it was possible to get there. A “Noseworthy” to the bone when it came to a healthy debate. Last, but not least, an awesome cook.

Our thanks go out to the staff at McKenzie Towne Retirement Residence, managed by Revera, who took “great care” of our Mom for almost 5 years. We are also thankful to the staff of Colonel Belcher LTC who provided the increased care that our Mom needed during her last couple of months. Enough cannot be said about the dedication, care & empathy that the staff of these facilities provide.

A service will be held later in Stephenville, NL. Plans are for the summer of 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ellen’s memory to Alzheimer Society of Canada.
