Obituary for Elizabeth Bernhardine Schumacher
Elizabeth “Elsie” Schumacher, 92, passed away peacefully in her sleep on March 31, 2021 in her residence in Calgary, Alberta. Initially from Hamburg, Germany, Elsie faced many hardships including enduring the many tragic events of World War 2. At 18, she married her late husband, Wolfgang Schumacher, with whom she spent 50 loving years. Together they welcomed three children, Theo (73), Burke (72) and Roy (56).
Forever strong willed and motivated, Elsie and her family moved to Calgary, where she persevered through many barriers. Elsie developed deep and long lasting friendships with her neighbors, work mates and fellow German community. She cared deeply about all her friends and family, who fondly remember her basement parties and backyard barbecues.
Elsie was known for her classiness, her love of life and was without a doubt the best dressed at every function. She carried an ever present sense of humor and modern wit – her telltale dry, sarcastic humor was adored by many.
In her later years, Elsie enjoyed her time with her long-term friend and partner, Paul Swab.
Her eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren fondly remember time spent with her, especially the endless supply of Haribo gummy bears she was known for.
Deeply loved, she embodied class, elegance, humour and tenacity. Elsie will be deeply missed by all her knew her as we continue to celebrate her life for generations to come.
