Obituary for Elizabeth Rosemary Liske (Byrne)

Liske, Elizabeth Rosemary (nee Byrne)
January 17 1945 - Edmonton, Alberta
September 5 2019 - Calgary, Alberta

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Elizabeth at the age of 74 with family at her side. She is survived by her son Jeffrey (Priscilla) and granddaughter Charlotte. She is also survived by her sisters Judy Deacon, Kathy (Jim) Eccleston, brother Mike (Jan) Byrne, cousin Mary Lou Connery and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Norman W. Byrne, mother Rose Byrne, brothers Donald and Norman Byrne, and sister Barbara Knutsen.

Elizabeth’s family lived in Edmonton for the winter months but migrated north to Yellowknife for the summer months where they eventually lived full time. She loved Yellowknife and spent many happy hours as a young girl at MacNiven beach with family and friends. The Byrne family children all took swimming lessons there each summer.

Liz attended Mount Carmel School in Edmonton, then went to Loretto Abbey in Toronto before Highschool in Yellowknife, finishing up at Notre Dame College in Nelson B.C.

She returned to Yellowknife each summer and eventually got an excellent job with the N.W.T Government. Her son Jeff was born in Yellowknife in 1983 and they moved to Calgary in 1984.

Those who knew Liz will know she loved dogs, nature and camping. There was always a dog in the house! At one point she had 3 sheltie dogs and a litter of puppies. She also enjoyed bird watching in her backyard as well as growing flowers in her garden.

She & her son Jeff loved to vacation during the summer at Barbara and Bill Knutsen’s house at Lake Okanagan near Kelowna. She got to spend quality time with her sister, Barb, while Jeff enjoyed swimming in the lake near the dock.

Liz worked hard as a project secretary at Worley Parsons (formerly Colt Engineering) for over a decade and enjoyed her work with the admin staff, engineers and drafters. She gradually transitioned into retirement in 2012.

She always wanted to travel when she was young. She especially wanted to go to Europe but never had the opportunity. Her dream of going to Europe was fulfilled by Jeff and his wife Priscilla in 2017. They surprised her with a Mediterannean cruise. She had the chance to explore London, Spain, Italy, France, Greece and Croatia.

On Feb 26, 2018 Liz’s first grandchild, Charlotte Rosalie Liske, was born. She was so happy to be a grandmother and she loved and adored Charlotte very much. She enjoyed visiting Charlotte and family every weekend and always had something new to give her each visit.

The family would like to extend their deepest thanks and gratitude to the doctors, nurses and care providers at Foothills Hospital, Carewest Sarcee and South Health Campus.

Memorial Service will be held at St. Michael Catholic Community (800-85th Street SW) on Saturday, September 14, 2019 at 11:00. A reception will follow in the church hall.
