Obituary for Elden Williard Witt

We are saddened to announce the passing of Elden “Eldie” Williard Witt on Friday, March 11, 2022 – he died peacefully surrounded by his wife, daughter and granddaughter at 93 years of age. He received exceptional care at the South Health Campus hospital in Calgary, AB but after suffering a heart attack in January of 2022, his beautiful heart was unable to recover. We count our blessings that Elden was able to remain healthy and vibrant right up until his heart attack and are grateful to report that his passing was unrelated to Covid-19.

A man like Elden is hard to sum up in few words - everyone who knew him knew his zest for life and adventure -always one to enjoy a good time with friends and family, anything maple (particularly fudge and ice cream) a nice drink (a smash, a fiver, or a sherry), the first to offer a whiskey the second you walked through his door and the “Witt wave” as you walked out.

Always ready with a memory and story from his past, he worked hard and played harder. He loved his church and a good game of cribbage, cards or a puzzle. He excelled at gardening and took such pride in his beautiful yard and home - the home he was able to live in everyday of his life despite his recent illness thanks to the supportive medical care of his wife and best friend, Florence, and his daughters Kathy and Tricia.

Elden was born to Ferdinand (Fenny) and Martha Witt (nee Biederman) on October 5, 1928 at home in the Alice Fraser Township. He is predeceased by his brother Kellard (Shirley) and parents, and his special sister (Aunt) Edith.

He met his forever best friend Florence in 1946, and they married June 22,1949. They had a blissful 73 years of marriage and 76 years of love. He was a doting and loving husband, never an unkind word to say and always trying to make life easier for his family. He lived in Okotoks, Alberta for the last 23 years of his life after many years in Pembroke, Ontario.

Elden leaves behind a wonderful legacy - he had three beautiful children, Katherine (Harold) Waldron, Patricia (Eddie -2012) Baptista and Jeffrey (Pamela Mirehouse) Witt - his love and pride for them was unending. Elden’s heart never did seem to recover from the loss of his beloved son, and they are now reunited 3 months after Jeffrey’s passing in December of 2021.

He is also survived by his many grandchildren, Amy (Tyler) Wasylenko, Lucas Waldron, Lacey (Jordan) Fox, Lauren (Jason) Hargreaves, Claire (Spencer) Trapp, Jennifer (Kevyn) Murray, Jordan (Katie) Witt, Stacey Witt, and Kirsten Brown (Mike Gropp), Hana (Evan) Eckert. He was fortunate enough to have 13 great grandchildren near and far.

He filled so many roles in his nearly 94 years - son, brother, cousin, husband, father, uncle to many nieces and nephews, grandfather (Bumpa) and great grandfather, and a loyal friend to so many. He will be greatly missed by everyone lucky enough to know and love him.

In lieu of flowers, his family asks that donations be made in Elden’s memory to Heart and Stroke Foundation.

A Celebration of Elden’s Life will be held this summer. To view and share photos, condolences and memories of Elden, please visit www.choicememorial.com.
