Obituary for Derek Richard Naumann (Watkins)
On Sunday, May 9th, 2021, Mother’s Day, Derek Naumann, passed away at the age of 53 after a courageous battle of two-a-half years with lung cancer.
Derek was born in Montreal, Quebec on August 13, 1967. The family later settled in the Western Provinces of Alberta and British Columbia where he spent most of his adult life. He met Gerry and the two were married on January 1, 2005 in Abbotsford. Derek had a successful career in the financial services and software industries. The couple moved to Alberta in 2012, spending three years in Edmonton, and the last six years in Calgary.
He was a loving and caring partner to his spouse Gerry from Calgary, as well as an amazing brother to Don and Heidi, and loving uncle to nephew Daryl, and niece Ashleigh.
Derek's favorite song was 'Bless the Broken Road’, and this is exactly how he chose to live his life. He was a dreamer and optimist by heart—a ‘giver’ who readily opens his heart, as well as his time to close friends. He was the life of the party and likes to entertain in style with friends and family.
Born into a single-parent household, Derek was ambitious, hard-working, and resourceful. He epitomizes Ralph Waldo Emerson’s definition of someone having lived a meaningful life:
“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate the beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!”
