Obituary for Darrell Blaine Willett

Darrell Willett
June 20, 1955 - December 21, 2022

Darrell Blaine Willett of Calgary, Alberta, passed away unexpectedly at home on December 21, 2022 at the age of 67 years. He was a loving son and will be deeply missed by his mother, Gladys Wille; brothers Darcy Son #2 (Amy) and Darwin Son #3 and their children, Jonica, Chris (Vanessa), Calvin (Alana), Trevor, Victoria (Jason), as well as 3 great nieces; 2 great nephews, many extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Les Willett in 1979 and his cherished companion, Marlene Paulsen in 2014.

Darrell was the first of 3 sons to be born into the Willett family and fondly acknowledged as Son #1. He was born in Calgary and raised in his early years through various locations in Alberta and BC. Growing up in the bush where his Dad worked construction brought many opportunities for exploring, bike riding adventures, fishing and building forts. Later, when the family moved to the Brant/Vulcan area in 1967, Darrell attended junior high school at Brant, and in his spare time enjoyed riding horses, skidooing and working with his Dad. In high school he played football and volleyball, graduating from Vulcan County Central High School in 1973. After graduating, he worked for a time at Alpha Dairy, Dome Petroleum and then started a 35 year career working for the City of Calgary, where he was able to build many good relationships and friendships through the years.

Darrell enjoyed playing and watching sports. After high school he played for the Calgary Mohawks and was an avid NFL Raider’s football fan throughout his life. He also liked hockey, rooting for and cursing the Calgary Flames, depending on their wins/losses. He and Mom would compare the score and highlights after each game. In more recent years, he obtained a gun license and liked going trap shooting and to the gun club with his friends. Darrell loved spending time with his family, whether it was going to visit his Mom, attending family gatherings, meeting up with his brothers, going on road trips, watching football or a lunch date, he treasured every moment. He was a devoted son, a watchful brother and a caring uncle. Life will not be the same without Darrell, but we are thankful for the time we had together. Until we meet again, he will always be in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are gratefully accepted by The Heart and Stroke Foundation.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in the Spring/Summer 2023. If you are interested in attending, please email Darcy at dna2005@shaw.ca The family will send out information prior to the service.
