Obituary for Dale Samuel McKinnon

McKinnon, Dale Samuel

On Tuesday, October 13th, 2020 Dale Samuel McKinnon of Calgary, AB passed away peacefully at the age of 67 after a full and happy life, followed by a short but determined fight against cancer. There are no words to describe how much he will be missed.

Dale (affectionately known as Sam) was born to Margaret and Jack McKinnon of Guelph, Ontario. Born into the middle of a family of six siblings, Dale understood the importance of a large family and held his family dear to him.

Dale met Linette in 1989 and quickly knew that she was the woman for him, soon also embracing her family of 5 siblings as his own. Dale and Linette wed on July 11, 1992 in Morley, AB and the love they had for each other was undeniable. They soon welcomed their daughter Laura into their lives on March 22, 1993 and son Ross on August 23, 1994. Dale raised his children to carry on his sense of humor, perseverance, drive and strong belief in family values.

Dale was defined by his big smile, happy nature and unwavering sense of optimism. He lived life to the fullest, taking on any opportunity to try something new. Moving to Calgary from Guelph in 1974, he then began hiking, cycling and even triathlon. He travelled extensively on his own through Europe, China, Africa and India. He and Linette then instilled their fondness for travel by visiting Europe, Central America and the Caribbean with the kids. But it was the “Bulls” Hockey Team and later in life Castle Mountain where he developed many lifelong friendships. Dale became incredibly close with his “Windsift Six” at Castle Mountain Resort and spent many hours hot tubbing, skiing and napping on the couch at the cabin. Watching his own children, his friends' children and his nieces and nephews grow up , and joining in on their fun throughout all the stages of their lives brought him great pleasure. Dale loved attending Stampeders Football games and many Grey Cups with his dear friends, but he was most passionate about the game of golf and Bearspaw Golf Club was where he felt most at home. Dale was always thought highly of during his career in the insurance world and made many dear and valued friendships.

Dale is survived by his loving wife, Linette Lahey of 28 years; daughter, Laura McKinnon; son, Ross McKinnon; brother, Robert McKinnon; sisters, Donna (Bruce) Gilroy and Karen Duby (Dave Doyle); brothers-in-law, Doug Wright and Rene (Janet) Lahey; sisters-in-law, Michelle (Enzo) Vicenzino, Simone Lahey and Monique (Scott) Byrne, Lise Lahey, as well as numerous nieces and nephews which he so adored. Dale was predeceased by his father, Jack McKinnon; mother, Margaret McKinnon and brother, John McKinnon. Dale's sister, Helen Wright so sadly passed away the day after Dale. We are heartbroken and will forever cherish the bond that they shared.

A private Celebration of Dale’s Life will be held. During these times, we ask that people celebrate in their own bubble and raise a toast to Dale. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dale’s memory to The Terry Fox Foundation - Family and Friends Forever Team.
