Obituary for Charity Akua DuMouchel (Mensah-Brown)

Charity Akua DuMouchel
1954 – 2022

Charity DuMouchel passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2022 in Calgary, AB at the age of 68 years.

Charity will be missed and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Yvette DuMouchel (Moss Tomlinson) of Vancouver, BC and son, Leslie DuMouchel of New York City, NY; grandson, Bodhi Tomlinson; as well as many other extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by her mother, Edith Attibiasa; father, Alexander Boampong; sisters, Comfort and Gladys; and brother, Kwaku.

Charity was born in Bodada Ghana, a small village in the Volta Region of Eastern Ghana. She was born to a cocao farm & business owner, Alexander and his wife, Edith. Alexander passed when Charity was young and she worked hard to help support the family while helping raise her younger family members. She attended secondary school and business college in Accra. While at business college, she met her husband, Daniel DuMouchel, a French-Canadian student who was living in Accra with family. They fell in love and married and moved to Windsor, Ontario. They had their first child, Yvette and then moved to Calgary where they had their second child, Leslie. Charity and Daniel bought their first home in SE Calgary.

Charity and Daniel raised their children in a culturally rich household. Throughout the 70’s to 90’s, they travelled many parts of the world: Canada, USA, Africa, Asia and Europe.
Charity was multi-talented and creative working with her hands, as well as having a great sense of style and grace. She developed a keen interest in fashion design and made some of her children’s clothing. They hosted many parties for their family and friends – they had the best parties – and food – in town.

Charity was a cake decorator at Safeway for 42 years. In the mid 80’s, she opened up a hair and nail salon called Providence Hair Salon, that specialized in Afro hairstyles and braiding. She became certified as an esthetician doing nails and waxing. She also taught cake decorating out of her home and would decorate wedding cakes for people. She was a master floral designer as well as an amazing cook of world cuisines, not to mention her green thumb in the garden. Charity was also President of the Ghanian Canadian Association for a few years.

Divorced from Daniel in the early 90’s, Charity became a single mom of two busy kids.

Charity was a woman of deep faith and was a very devoted Christian. She attended First Assembly Church. She was a strong African woman who instilled in her children their traditions and values and to put God and family first. She was nurturing and open-minded and raised many other children beyond her own maternal ones. She was wise and had a youthful spirit and was extremely gifted. Charity was a wonderful grandmother, a role she took with care and pride. She had a deep & loving connection with her adoring grandson.

We will miss the beautiful, stylish, loving, generous spirited, easy going, resilient, funny and fierce lady.
