Obituary for Cameron Lee Roberts

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Cameron Lee Roberts, of Calgary Alberta, at the age of 65, on Wednesday, August 10, 2022. After a long and courageous battle with cancer, he passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family.

Cameron is survived by his loving wife Anita, his sons John Roberts (Lisa Bergerman), Dan Roberts, Jarrod Parks (Holly Parks), Derek Parks, as well as his grandchildren. Mourning him as well are his extended family and friends. He was preceded by his parents Dennis Roberts and Florence Roberts, and his sister Kelly Roberts.

Cameron was born on April 25, 1957, in Edmonton, Alberta. From an early age, it was obvious Cameron was introspective and inventive. He was a quiet and gentle child and never had difficulty finding ways to entertain himself. It was in high school when Cameron ultimately found his passion for art and music and began his path to becoming an artist.

It was during his study of the Renaissance artists that he realized his fascination and love of figurative art. He knew it was the most difficult subject to capture but naturally lent itself to the sensitivity and excitement he felt when making art. In 1980 Cameron graduated from the Alberta College of Art with a major in sculpture and drawing. Shortly after graduation he began his career with Canadian Western Natural Gas (later to be known as ATCO). While he considered his time with ATCO to be his hobby, he dedicated his time to his career as an artist in every waking moment he had outside of work.

Cameron shared and mentored his talents in the arts community, teaching art to many students over the years at University of the Arts (ACAD), and privately at various studios and galleries. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016, for his contributions to the arts in the community.
Cameron was also a poet and a songwriter. He played guitar, sang and performed at many venues and events and for family and friends.

Creativity was his Pathway…

Cameron was a dedicated man. In between all the time spent working tirelessly to provide and to create, he was an attentive father to his two sons John and Daniel. His boys never took a backseat to anything else going on in his life. He was a patient and affectionate father. He promoted a household of introspective and critical thought and certainly passed on his creative and passionate nature to his sons.

On December 27, 2000, Cameron met Anita Parks, who would become the love of his life and his wife in 2008. Anita became his muse almost immediately. Anyone who knows her knows she is a force in and of herself. Relentlessly caring, loving, generous, and optimistic, Anita pulled the artist he was into the spotlight. She championed his career but more importantly helped him find the dormant confidence he needed to shine. Without Anita, Cameron wouldn’t have survived his illness as long as he did. Staying organized and steadfast in the face of the illness, Anita was at the helm of what was needed and always managed to give us all hope.

When Cameron and Anita met, it wasn’t long before he met her two sons, Jarrod and Derek Parks. As the years went on, Cameron created a father-son bond with Jarrod and Derek, connecting through their shared interest of history and literature and their general sense of curiosity and critical thought.

Cameron’s tenure as an artist garnered him numerous accolades and awards. He had many solo exhibitions in various provinces and cities as well as group exhibits. His passion was contagious to which his many students, family, and friends can attest. He was truly an inspiring man who was highly respected and loved by his peers, students and friends.
