Obituary for Burke Lotar Schumacher

Burke Schumacher
October 12th, 1948 - May 16th, 2021

Burke Schumacher, beloved Father, Brother, Grandpa, Uncle and Son, passed away suddenly at Foothills Hospital, Calgary AB on Sunday, May 16th, 2021, at the age of 72 years.

He was the loving father of Natasha Schumacher (Dalton Reid) of Calgary, AB and Trevor Schumacher (Kimberly Schumacher) of Calgary, AB; as an “OPA“ by his grandchildren and step grandson, Thomas and Gabrielle Schumacher; Nathan and Mikaela George, and Austin Reid. He will also be lovingly remembered by the mother of his two children, Juanita Schumacher of (Mary’s Town NFLD). He was predeceased by his parents, Wolfgang and Elizabeth (Elsie) Schumacher.
Burke was born in West Beckum, Germany in 1948 to Wolfgang and Elsie Schumacher, brother of Theo (73) and Roy (56).

At the young age of 9 he made the long journey to Canada on an ocean liner with his mother and oldest brother arriving in the middle of a cold January in 1957. Burke grew up in Calgary AB, where he was the light of his little brother Roy’s eye, as the 16 year age difference proved to be one of the most special things about their relationship. Eventually Burke married and started a family of his own, with Juanita and his two children, Natasha, and Trevor. He will always be remembered as a true family man.

His entrepreneurial skills, along with the strong partnerships he had built in the earlier years of his career, in the heavy-duty trucking and equipment industry, allowed him to start up and run a successful locally owned Alberta company, Caytec Equipment in (1982).

Burke was most passionate about family and holiday traditions. Every season there was a reason to celebrate, Halloween and Christmas time especially. The seasons always seemed to come alive at home with his love to set up the festive decorations knowing how much excitement it created for everyone in the family. And who can forget the Thanksgiving “Turkey Stuffers” long weekend celebrations in the mountains.

Burke was a true outdoorsman and loved to camp and fish in his beloved Kananaskis mountains, we fondly remember all of family summer vacations in the big blue BARTH motorhome in Penticton BC, where he knew everyone in the campground, he was never shy to invite someone over for a beverage or two as they passed by the site.

Burke was known for having a bit of a green thumb. As spring and summer approached each year, his care for his backyard garden oasis was always a priority; the flowers and veggies he planted were abundant and fragrant and the sound of the trickling water fountains created serenity for so many family, friends and countless neighbors. His openness to have people over for a backyard BBQ or “sasparilla” filled with lots of ice, was a staple in the Schumacher household.

When Burke retired in 2008, his commitment to his family continued, especially the care for his aging mom Elsie. Where he lovingly prepared meals, created warmth in the home and continued to keep the family traditions alive to so many extended family and friends.

Burke was an artist at heart; and in the winter months he spent countless hours creating beautiful paintings that he would share with all that loved him.

Those that knew him will remember his generosity, kind heart and warm smile. We love you Burke, you will be tremendously missed by all of us.
