It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of our precious Mom, Bernice Nordmark on May 27, 2022, just one day past her 91st Birthday.
Mom was born on May 26, 1931, to Hazel and Joseph Huber. She was born in Sexsmith at Johanna’s birthing home. She was raised in the North Kleskun area with her seven siblings.
She was an active girl always trying to keep up with her brothers. As a girl she rode horses, played ball was involved in her church and generally was always up for a good gag, usually at someone else’s expense. She was adventurous and kind, always concerned for those less fortunate. Many times, growing up there would be a wayward person at our dinner table or a night or two in the spare bedroom.
She worked as a waitress, telephone operator, and an aid to two disabled young women.
In 1980 she became owner and operator of The Chicken House in Sexsmith. She spent the next 7 years working 24/7. She holds many great memories of the years there, with some very dear friends and staff members. She loved the interaction with the kids from school and the community.
After Mom and Dad were married, they moved many times, before settling in Sexsmith for many years and then into Grande Prairie in 1992 for retirement.
Mom loved to listen to Charlie Pride, to play cards especially solitaire, bingo, sew, and garden. When we were kids, she would spend many hours making our clothes. She volunteered with the Skating Club in Sexsmith, Christ Lutheran Church, and on various committees.
She moved to Calgary in 2016 and her final home was Southwood care centre. She was loved immensely and cared for in the sincerest professional way. The staff treated her with kindness, compassion and gentleness. Special thanks to Nari, Shinu, and Rhonda. It was OK to leave her there, as we knew she was treated like a mom by all the staff. They took caring for her to a different level, and we will be forever grateful.
Grandchildren were her highlight in life, her pride and joy. There’s was a place for unconditional love. Mom was always up for a game of red riding hood or sewing and baking with the kids. They would attend as many sports events as possible when the grandkids were playing. She loved and cared for each one and had a special relationship with them all.
Dementia took many things from Mom, but it did not take her ability to smile and laugh, her humor and her strength and resilience. She was a warrior who had courage beyond measure. She was a character with a unique personality, loved to play pranks and dress up and always made you feel welcome.
We are grateful for the years we had with her, and she will be missed immensely. Her faith was unwavering to the end, and she was looking forward to being reunited with family and friends.

Daelin (Aysu) Nordmark, Bryn Nordmark, and Arlin Schell. Her 3 great grandchildren, Cody, Emery and Kai Fedchuk, and two coming this summer.
Her siblings Cliff (Eldeen) Huber, Alice Rode and Lorraine Garrett, Sisters-in-law Eleanor Huber, Annette Huber, and Donna Huber and many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family. Also, by Haakon’s family in Norway.
She was predeceased by husband Haakon Nordmark, granddaughter Tova Schell, brothers Ed, Bob, Gilbert, and Bill Huber, brothers-in-law, Andy Garrett, Alvin Rode and her parents Joe and Hazel Huber.
A celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, June 25, at 1:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church with a light lunch to follow. Internment will be held at Emmaus Lutheran Cemetery for family.
