Obituary for Arnold Henry Bergen

Arnold Bergen passed away on Sunday, July 10, 2022 in Calgary following a brief battle with cancer. Arnold is survived by Linda, his loving wife of almost 57 years; his sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick & Lisa and Scott & Cathy; and grandchildren, Sophia, Brodie, Ben and Joel.

Arnold was born in 1937 and grew up on a farm near Carstairs, Alberta, with parents Frank and Margaret Bergen, and his brother and sister - Virgil and Mildred (married to Gerry). After completing highschool he moved to Calgary where he studied at SAIT to become a Journeyman Mechanic.

He met Linda through youth group at Northhill Mennonite Church while he was going to school in Calgary. In 1965 they got married at Olivet Mennonite Church in Clearbrook, BC. They started their married life in Calgary, with Arnold working at Watrous Equipment and Linda working as a nurse at the General Hospltal. In 1967 they bought a house on Vienna Drive - a home where they were to live for the next 49 years. Soon after moved into their new home, they started their family, with Patrick arriving in 1969 and Scott in 1970.

Arnold and Linda were active members at Foothills Mennonite Church, with Arnold serving as Church Chairman on two occasions. When not busy with work or church, they enjoyed camping, visiting with friends and travelling.

Arnold spent most of his career working for the City of Calgary in Fleet and Supply Management Services, evaluating heavy equipment and making purchase decisions for the City.

In 2001, Arnold and Linda retired after long and successful careers. With retirement, they turned their attention to volunteering at the MCC Thrift store twice a week and travelling, both to see their children and to explore the world. Their travels took them to places such as Australia/New Zealand, the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Mexico, Northern Europe and Hawaii. Each trip brought them lots of new experiences, a lot of photos and even more great memories.

Arnold had a good quality of life right to the end - he continued to volunteer at the thrift store, make trips to visit family and even attend a Stampede breakfast on the day of his passing.

At Arnold’s request and the family’s wishes, there will not be a Funeral Service or Visitation. If you’d like to express your condolences to Linda and her family or share any thoughts or memories, please take a few moments to add your thoughts here. If you’d like to make a donation in Arnold’s memory, please give a gift to MCC Alberta.
