With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Andrew Derek Normore, 62, of Calgary, Alberta on March 4, 2020. Derek valiantly fought cancer for many years and took great solace in having family and loved ones at his side during his journey and at his time of death.
Derek was born on Bell Island, Newfoundland in 1958, but spent most of his early years in Baie Verte. Derek always spoke with great fondness about his childhood with his parents and siblings in the small mining town.
With an education in Civil Engineering Technology, Derek found his first oil and gas job with Schlumberger in Alberta with postings offshore Newfoundland then Louisiana, Texas, Nigeria and England finishing up his career as president of Schlumberger Canada and followed as President of Saxxon energy into retirement in 2014.
It was during his work with Schlumberger in Houston that he met his wife Dawn. Dawn and Derek were an instant match, both Newfoundlander’s with an affection for good food, good wine and great music they spent the last years enjoying each other’s company and the occasional visit from their grandchildren.
Derek’s immediate family was small by 50’s standards, but their connection was strong, no matter where they resided. Holidays, birthdays, and special occasions – all were a reason to be together. A family get together was a time to share stories and maybe a drink or two … or three.
It is during this time of grief that we look back and hold on to the fond memories we have of this loving, intelligent, charismatic man. Derek is survived by his wife, Dawn Hewlett; step daughter, Meaghan Noel (Ryan); grandchildren, Emmet and Raymond Doucet; sister, Anne Marie Lewis (Wayne); nephews, Andrew Lewis, Jeffery Lewis (Amy) and Ryan Lewis (Danielle); brother, Steve Normore (Dediree) and niece Alexandra Normore.
Derek lived a very full life filled with unique experiences. He was always the first to give thanks to the people who helped him along the way. Knowing the end was in sight he made a point to give credit where he believed credit was due and wanted to personally thank Dr. Emma Billington, Dr. Scott Dowden, Dr. Subermanian, Dr. Wu, all the nurses that attended to him in the Chemo Unit of Tom Baker with special thanks to nurses, Leez, Ivy, Cara and Dr. Sumra. As well as our Palliative Home Care Nurse, Terri Kerr, who lovingly guided us through the final days.
Derek requested to rejoin his parents, Andy and Mary Normore who had gone before him, and was cremated at Choice Memorial funeral home in Calgary, AB. An End of Life Celebration in spring 2020 will honor the life and achievements of this special person.
Always a charitable man, in lieu of flowers, Derek would request any donation to the hospital that helped him so much, Tom Baker Cancer Centre.
