Obituary for Alice Lena Holt (Trauter)

Alice Lena Holt (Trauter) passed away peacefully on October 22, 2022 after several months of declining health.

Alice was born on November 12, 1934 in Saskatchewan at the Eatonia Hospital. She was the eighth of eleven children born to Wilhelm and Christina (Dreher) Trauter who had immigrated from Russia/Germany. With her stepbrother and stepsister, there were thirteen children living on the family farm near Glidden, Saskatchewan. Alice learned to work hard and formed strong bonds with all her siblings, especially her nine sisters. Their walk to school was about 5 miles and in the winter, that trip was made in a one-horse open sleigh.

When she was 12, the family moved to a farm near Tilley, Alberta. Alice attended high school in Brooks and after finishing, moved Calgary to live with her sister and worked for the Independent Biscuit Company. She met Steve Holt at a dance and married him in 1955. They had two sons, Alec in 1958 and David in 1961.

Alice faced health issues early in her life; rheumatic fever as a teenager, polio in her 20’s and a life-changing brain tumor when she was 38. She was an impeccable homemaker and exceptional cook making the best-ever cabbage rolls and delicious roast beef dinners. She was a caring mother to her adoring sons and to her fur babies, dogs Ginger and Princess and cats, King and Candy. Alice was a devoted wife and after Steve suffered a stroke, she tended to him in hospital every day for over two years until his passing in 2000. Alice easily made friends throughout her life and kept close ties with Ira & Joan, Charlene & Errol, Sharon & Bob, Addie & Len, Gladys & Tom and Millie.

Alice relished watching all sports and was a loyal Stampeders, Flames, and Blue Jays fan. Her passion for playing casino slot machines was highlighted with an excursion to Las Vegas and she thoroughly enjoyed her trip to the Yukon with David. She was an avid reader of mysteries and completed dozens of puzzles in no time and was always up for a game of cards or tile rummy.

For the past five years, Alice lived as independently as possible at Carewest Garrison Green. She was grateful for the excellent care givers and became friends to many of them and the other residents.

Cherishing the memory of this resilient woman is her loving family; son Alec and daughter-in-law Cindy, son David; grandchildren Christina, Amanda, Devan and Adrian (Joanne); and her very special great grandchildren, Lumen and Walter. She is also survived by her sister Irene. We will miss her dearly and she will remain in our hearts forever.

In keeping with her wishes, her family will have a private burial service.
