July 27, 1978 – February 4, 2019

It is with unbelievable sadness that we have to announce Amanda’s tragic and unexpected passing on Monday, February 4, 2019 at the Foothills Hospital. She was just 40 years old.

Amanda was born and raised in Calgary. After graduating from Western Canada High School, she headed to university in the Maritimes. She obtained both a B.Sc. (Hons.) and a B.A. from Mount Allison University and an LL.B. from Dalhousie University. She then returned home to Calgary where she articled at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP and was called to the Alberta Bar in September 2006. In June 2007 she accepted a position at Tingle Merrett and became a Partner at the firm in 2015. She left Tingle Merrett in 2017 to pursue other ventures.

Amanda was dearly loved by all her family and we will miss her terribly. She was a very kind person with a wonderful smile that would light up a room. She leaves behind her beloved four-legged friend (Harry), her mother (Jane), her father (Owie) and her aunt (Ann Clipstone) who was like a second mother to her. She is also survived by her grandmother Joan Clipstone, her aunt Sydna Ellis, her cousin Debbie Ellis, numerous relatives in Wales and her “sister by choice” Robin Glennie.

Amanda was blessed to have many wonderful friends in Canada and around the world. We used to tease her that she had more friends than anybody had a right to have! She loved you all.

Our very special thanks go out to the wonderful, caring nurses and doctors in the ICU at the Foothills Hospital who tried so desperately to save her life and ensured she passed peacefully at the end.

To respect Amanda wishes, she will be cremated and there will be no funeral or memorial service. We plan on holding a Celebration of Life in the late Spring or early Summer.

Should you wish to make a donation in Amanda’s memory, please consider the Calgary Humane Society or a charity of your own choosing. Alternatively, please just do something especially nice for someone else in her memory.

Mr. and Mrs. Ellis, please accept my sincere condolences. I went to school with Amanda at Mt.A and knew her through both Biology and English classes. She often seemed to have a certain 'glow' about her that made her special in a way I never really knew how to articulate. But I will always remember that about her. In memory of her generous, glowing spirit, I took your advice and extended an act of kindness on Valentine's Day this year. I now live in the Netherlands. I asked an expat business here called "The Canadian Cupcakery" to make and donate (in Amanda's name) some very special cupcakes to the local "dierenambulance", a pet emergency service. They were happy to help out, added more cupcakes to the donation themselves and I am told brought big smiles to the faces of several very dedicated animals lovers working with the pet emergency service here in The Hague / Rijswijk area. Amanda's light continues to shine brightly via her friends around the world, including now here in the Netherlands. [Julianne Mayo Sullivan, Class of 2000 Mt.A]

Dear Jane, Ann and Owie,

I’ve been thinking about Ellis a lot over these past weeks, and wanted to write this small note to share a few thoughts with you.

I was lucky enough to meet Ellis when we articled together at Blakes. I remember thinking, upon meeting her for the first time, that Ellis was an absolute force – she radiated confidence and intelligence, but at the very same time she was friendly, welcoming and really, just the most fun. She was the unspoken leader of what became our crew, and she led us into many hilarious and memorable adventures (most of which I’m realizing shouldn’t be shared in public!). We always seemed to be surrounded by a large group of strong women and I will forever remember the nights of all of us together, dancing (often on top of something – tables, chairs, snowbanks) and laughing into the early morning hours (and sometimes the late morning hours). I can hear her laugh (and giggle) clearly in my mind and I can see her doing her signature Ellis move – giving a little shrug and then looking over her shoulder with a smile.

She will be so missed by the many people who loved her.
