Obituary for William Leigh Wienmeyer

William L. Wienmeyer (Willie), a beloved husband, father, brother, papa, and uncle, passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023.

Willie was predeceased by his son, Terry; his mother and father; his brother, Paul, and sister, Marlayne. He is survived by his wife, Barb of 57 years; son, Steven; daughter, Sandra; stepson, Bob (Lori); grandchildren, Brandon, Madison, Mack, Riley, Carley, and Jack; brothers, Brian (Julia) and Darwyn (Darlene); his best friend Don of 48 years; and by numerous nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and brothers-in-law.

Willie, Barb, and Terry moved to Calgary from Shaunavon, Saskatchewan in 1968 to the Bowness area. Steve and Sandra were born there, and the family still lives in Bowness. Willie started off in Calgary getting his journeyman carpenter ticket. He worked for many years in residential, he was “Hawkeye” for Beavers in Bowness, he helped on the Bowness Sportsplex, and was foreman on the building of Fort Calgary. As the construction industry slowed, his love to build and fabricate, plus the fact that he lived nearby, brought him to Bow Cycle. There they let him build and fabricate and weld (a trait from his dad). Willie made hockey stick racks, bike racks, and even rebuilt a bike for a handicapped boy so he could ride it. Willie’s time at Bow Cycle led to lifetime friendships between him, Jim, and Brian. The welding he could do led him to Klipper and Concrete. What was supposed to be a short-term job ended up being forty years. I think it is fair to say he was Barry’s chief maintenance man. When the company moved out to Springbank, Willie found his happy place. He was able to work and socialize (a lot). If something needed to be fixed, he found a way. He worked for Barry until he couldn’t but to talk to him was as if he were still out there. Also, another forever friendship formed between him, Barry, and Kent.

Willie wasn’t in the best of health the past years, but this last episode was more than he could handle. He passed away at Foothills Hospital. The shock of him not being able to pull through once again was unbelievable to the family. He always found a way!

He will be dearly loved and missed by his family and friends. Please feel free to post any thoughts or feelings as we would love to hear stories and interactions that happened over the years (we are sure there are a few!). Please share the peace and love we are sending you and yours.

A memorial service for Willie will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, any donations in Willie’s memory may be sent to Cystic Fibrosis Canada .
