Obituary for Susan Carol Dunbar (Ahorner)

Susan Carol Dunbar (nee Ahorner) was born on July 26, 1957 in Calgary, AB to John and Katie Ahorner. She passed away on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 in Calgary, AB at the age of 65 years.

She received her Medical Laboratory Technologist Diploma from SAIT, worked at Calgary Laboratory Services before moving to Canadian Red Cross/Canadian Blood Services where she worked tirelessly for 25 years until her retirement in September of 2022. She was devoted, extremely proud and meticulous of her Medical Laboratory Technologist duties.

Family was extremely important to Susan; she was especially proud of becoming a mother. When it came to her children, Susan was always their #1 fan in whatever they chose to take part in. Whether it was Football, Baseball or Softball she could always be seen and especially heard from the stands cheering on her children and their teams. Susan worked and lived for kids and she did everything in her power to give them a life they grew up very proud of having. Two of Susan's
proudest moments was being able to see her daughters, Stacy and Kristina get married. She always loved a good party!

Susan was also a proud and loving Oma to her only grandchild, Donovan Damsgaard and she was present during his birth. Susan loved going to the zoo and zoo lights with him and her daughters. She always provided Donovan with so much encouragement, guidance, unconditional love, care and candy over the past 10 years and even enjoyed a slice of chocolate cake with her grandson during her last days.

As much as she loved her children, she also loved her many dogs that she had throughout her lifetime. Susan was an animal lover through and through.

Susan was an avid baseball and Toronto Blue Jays fan, watching nearly every game she could, even if it meant recording it and watching it later. Some of her greatest memories are watching the Blue Jays live with her children in Toronto and a trip to San Francisco to see games at both Oracle Park and Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum. Susan also enjoyed travelling to warm destinations such as Costa Rica, Cuba and the Dominican Republic where she had many adventures and time relaxing with her daughters and close friends. She also loved camping, sitting around the fire and having laughs with anyone lucky enough to be in her presence.

Susan battled cancer for 20 years, diagnosed in 2003 with Stage 3 Breast Cancer, she fought hard going through a mastectomy, radiation therapy and chemotherapy to come out cancer free. Unfortunately, in 2014, the breast cancer returned. She was given an estimated life expectancy of 3 to 5 years but continued to fight, live and make some of her greatest memories for nearly 9 more years.

Susan will be missed and lovingly remembered by her son, Jeff Dunbar; daughters, Kristina Dunbar (Bryce Martens) and Stacy Damsgaard (Jeff Rosaine); grandson, Donovan Damsgaard; brother, Brian Ahorner; nephew, Ryley Ahorner; as well as her pet grandchildren, Jax, Hank, Gary, Oscar, Ron, Chalk Socks and Yoshi. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Katie Ahorner.

A Celebration of Susan’s Life will be held on Saturday, June 3, 2023 from 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm at the family residence (38 Hidden Ranch Terrace NW). You are welcome to arrive anytime between those hours as it will be an informal gathering to share stories with friends and family.
