Obituary for Stewart James

Stewart Roger David James
November 24, 1938 - November 8, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce our father, Stewart James, passed away on his own terms on Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, Alberta. He was strong and stoic right to the very end and passed peacefully with dignity and courage.

Stew was born in Toronto, Ontario. When his father, Leslie James, returned from the war, the family relocated to Calgary. He started his career with Canada Post at the age of 19 and came to enjoy his retirement, as a Station Depot Manager, in his mid 50’s.

In 1966, Stewart married Ellen (née McLaughlin), gaining a daughter, Roxi. Later that year, Melinda arrived on his birthday. Their marriage wasn’t meant to be, but years later in April of 1985, Dad married his soul mate and best friend Beverly (née Warren). Bev brought with her another daughter, Lorraine, and with unwavering determination and compassion, they were both devoted to Lorraine and her special needs.

Stew and Bev enjoyed traveling over the years with highlights being their Alaskan Cruise, Hawaii and the Dakota’s, USA. They had a small motorhome and would spend weekdays out at McLean Creek (Bragg Creek), enjoying fishing and being surrounded by nature. Back home in Calgary, bowling, shuffleboard and endless games of Yahtzee were a given.

After the crush of Bev’s sudden passing in April 2012, Stew joined “The Old Bastard’s” at the Chaplehow Legion. He very much enjoyed the camaraderie and friendship. On New Year’s Eve, 2012 Stew asked a lady he’d known for years on a date. The friendship grew into a beautiful, loving companionship for what would be the remainder of his life. Bridgette, Dad’s “Angel of Mercy”, brought an abundance of joy and happiness to Stew.

Dad will be deeply missed by his lady friend, Bridgette; brother, Garry James (Marj); daughters, Roxi James, Melinda James (Jon) and Lorraine Warren; grandchildren, Whitney James (Shane), Tyne Dery, Taylor Dery (Kaitlin); great grandchildren, Austin, Owen, Payden and Sterling; his nephews, Stephen and David James; and his niece, Crystal Hoskins. Stew was predeceased by his parents, Leslie and Elsie James; his wife, Beverly; his sister, Lynda Heard; his granddaughter, Jenna Marie James and his beloved dog “Sue”.

Heartfelt gratitude to Tammy of MAID, Dr. Keller and both Stephen’s from UNIT 82 of the Rockyview hospital. Stephen trying to help Dad with an IPAD so he could watch his football game. And to Tao who spent the last hours by my Dad’s side. Sincere gratitude to Jon for your unwavering patience and support as Stew’s technical support, travel agent, getting him to the doctor’s appointments and being his Meals on Wheels delivery service when I had food to bring up to his house. He thought of you like a son.

It was Dad’s wish not to have a funeral. There will be an interment at the Edenbrook Cemetery in the coming months where he will be laid to rest with Bev by his side.
