Obituary for Sophie Mary Toth (Kubok)

Sophie Mary Toth
August 7, 1938 - November 25, 2022

Sophie Toth, beloved wife of Laszlo (Leslie) Toth of Calgary, passed away peacefully at home on Friday,
November 25, 2022 at the age of 84 years.

She was the loving mother of Leslie Toth Junior, Christopher Toth and Robert Toth (Andrea Toth) all of Calgary. She will also be lovingly remembered by her elder sister, Amelia Kubok of Calgary; cousins, the Turlik family of Creston BC; brother-in-law, Sandorne Kocsis (Ilona and family) and the Beres family of Hungary; grandchildren, Nicole Melanson (Kyle), Brienne Toth (David Piraux), Erik Hohmann, Nina Hohmann and Maisie Toth; great grandchildren, Zander, Dominic and Brandon of Calgary; nieces, Helen Sedran (Trevor, sons Evan and Jared), Natalie Kubok (Dwayne Norman, daughter Siena), and Ursula Kubok (Trevor Bacon) all of Calgary; dear friends, Josie Bazant of Calgary, and the Urban family of Edmonton along with many other friends and family both in Canada and Europe. She was predeceased by brother, John Kubok; daughter-in-law, Susan Toth (Leslie), and sister-in-law, Clarika and husband, Steven Beres

Born in Poland in 1938 at the outset of World War II, Sophie spent the first years of her life traversing through Refugee Camps in London, Siberia, and Tanzania with her mother, aunt, sister Amelia and later her brother John, finally arriving in Canada to the safe haven of the Urban family farm outside Edmonton. Sophie enjoyed care-free teen years with family in Creston BC, playing basketball on the High School team and actively involved in the local Polish Canadian community. She adored dancing, and it was onstage as a dancer in a Polish Dance Group at a cultural dance festival where Les, her Hungarian Canadian husband-to-be first saw Sophie - and it was love at first sight.

Sophie and Les were married in 1959 at a small church ceremony in Calgary and began a lifetime together as active leaders and involved members of both the Polish and Hungarian Canadian communities in Calgary. Together they enjoyed decades filled with attending cultural events, and hosting events attended by foreign dignitaries, family, community members and newcomers from abroad - and whenever there was a gala ball in Edmonton or Calgary, Sophie was sure to be there, dressed in a gorgeous gown dancing the night away with her husband. Sophie was also an avid participant in the Polish Church, from singing in the choir, to helping in the church kitchen, and in 1984, she had the honour of acting as translator for the visit of Pope John Paul II to Calgary.

Sophie and Les raised three sons, Leslie Junior, Christopher and Robert, and when not tending to her brood or attending the boys’ sporting events at home, Sophie loved spending time travelling with her husband and sons. They enjoyed many holidays together through Europe to spend time with family there, across Canada, to Hawaii joined by close friends, and especially the gift of a marvellous 25th wedding anniversary trip to the Panama Canal from her sons. When the family was young they enjoyed weekends at the cottage Les built at Siksika, and later at their trailer in Fairmont, BC. In recent years, Sophie and Les were thrilled to enjoy a European River Cruise, stopping and enjoying the famous sights and dear family along the way, and also a tropical trip to Mexico with friends.

A proud “Babcia” to her many Grandchildren and Great-grandchildren, Sophie loved nothing more than having family and friends over, and for Easter, for Les’ famous annual “Bacon Fry”, and especially for Christmas Eve when her entire extended family would come enjoy her handmade traditional meal and time visiting around the Christmas tree opening presents.

Sophie was an avid professional sport enthusiast (following everything on tv – except baseball), a night-owl reader, and almost always had a puzzle on the go on the dining room table. But Sophie’s greatest joy and accomplishment was her garden, even up to her final day when Les spotted her tending to her dozens of prized geranium cuttings. Sophie loved to create a flower-filled European oasis in her yard, and dedicated many, many hours each year to planning, planting, tending and showing off her beautiful plantings of roses (her favourite), formal annual flower borders and vegetable garden. Sophie, Zosha, Momma, Mom, Babcia, friend, you are dearly missed, but your zest for life and joy in celebration will be remembered and continue as an inspiration to us all.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady Queen Of Peace Polish Catholic Church (2111 Uxbridge Dr NW, Calgary, AB) on Monday, December 5, 2022 at 10:30 am, followed by a luncheon reception at the church hall.
