Obituary for Penny Wallace

Penny Wallace
July 17, 1939 - April 6, 2023

It is with great sadness that the family of Penny Wallace announce her passing on Thursday, April 6, 2023 at the Rockyview Hospital.

Penny is survived by her children, Chris (Brenda) Forgues, Kathy (Mike) Moore, Michelle (Dan) Hardwick, and Garry (Caro Alarie) Wallace; grandchildren, Callum (Victoria), Olivia (Tyler), Katrina (Chris), Stephen, Robin, Emma, Daphne, and Hugo; great grandchildren, Winston, Leo, Jamie, Quaid, Violet, and Florence; and siblings, Sandra (John) Hart, Chris (Anne) Forsyth, Jane (Guy) Passey, and Sara Nessman. She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Sefton, in 2013 and sister, Kate Forsyth in 2021.

Penny was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, the first of six children of Dr. C. W. Forsyth and Josie Forsyth. She spent her childhood in Saskatchewan, Montreal, Halifax, Calgary and High River. She attended the University of Alberta, lived in Montreal during her twenties, then returned to Calgary where she completed her Bachelor of Education at the University of Calgary. She taught English Language Arts in Calgary for 28 years. She earned a Masters Degree in Education in 1993. After retiring from teaching fulltime, she worked as a substitute teacher and for the University of Calgary as an Education Field Supervisor.

Penny was a dedicated teacher and popular with her students. She gained many friends throughout her teaching career, and many more in retirement through her participation in varied activities such as golf, yoga, Zumba, Bridge and book clubs. She will be remembered as a kind, warm and fun person who exuded intelligence and strength, an avid reader whose sense of humour was infectious to the end. She was loved by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

A Celebration of Penny’s Life will be planned for the summer of 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Penny’s memory to either the Calgary Health Foundation or to the Canadian Cancer Society.
