Obituary for Patricia Viola Nevins (Sherman)

Patricia Viola Nevins
September 1929 – December 2022

Patricia Viola Nevins (nee Sherman) was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta by her father Peter and mother Katherine. Patricia, with her sisters Edna, Joyce and Doris grew up in Riverside and attended Langevin Junior High and Crescent Heights Senior High. When Peter died suddenly at a relatively youthful age, Patricia dutifully remained with her mother and then later had her mother live with her until her mother’s death in 1987.

Patricia started her working life with Smith and Deforest Realty in Calgary and her external work ended with The Calgary Herald. Patricia was also a tireless worker with her beloved husband Jack Allen Nevins (whom she married in 1971) on their property in Foothills County near the community of Davisburg where they also operated a small cow / calf operation well into their 60’s.

Pat continued to reside at “the farm” after the passing of Jack in November of 2019, until cancer took its final toll in December of this year. Thankfully, Patricia “brokered” a deal with EMS after a recent fall and agreed to be transported to High River Hospital to be assessed. After finally admitting she was just too tired to return home, Patricia agreed to stay in palliative care where she could be warm and comfortable. While awaiting potential transfer to hospice (only in the country mind you) Patricia passed under the compassionate care of the hospital staff at the age of 93.

Patricia is survived by her three sisters, several nieces, a nephew, and their children.

Patricia will be taken to her final resting place beside her husband, near her mother and father on a later date.

The family would like to thank the compassionate staff of the Tom Baker Cancer Center and the very caring staff of the High River Hospital. We would also like to acknowledge the care and empathy provided by EMS staff during their “negotiations” with Patricia so she could be safe and comfortable at the end.
