Obituary for Norman Quentin Kwong

It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Norman (Norm) Kwong, 40 of Calgary, AB on Sunday, January 21, 2024.

Norm is survived by his partner and “love”, Mandy Newell; their treasured family, Vallie-Rose Reed, Spoon & Mallie; his proud parents, Faming & Jerzy Garbiec; his loving sister, Helen Garbiec-Ho (Justin Ho); and countless family members, friends and colleagues whose lives he touched.

Norm was one of those rare old souls that lived life on their own terms, was never afraid to speak his mind and always the first to rise to take on any challenge. His fiery personality, contagious smile and vibrant character would light up any room he was in. To those who loved him, he will be deeply missed and fondly remembered as a truly generous and giving person who always put the needs and care of others before his own. He was selfless and dedicated to all those who had the fortune to be a part of his life.

Even as a young boy, Norm always lived his life in pursuit of his next adventure. He loved to explore, learn new things, visit new places, try new foods and push beyond boundaries to reach new heights. He visited many places in his short life and was always so proud to show his travel logs, photos and memories. He was perfectionist in all things he pursued and well-known to approach everything he did with 110% of effort, whether with his family, friends, loved ones or career and when faced with challenges or things not going as planned, Norm would always remind us with his glowing smile “it’s just part of the adventure!”.

Although he leaves us far too soon and leaves a void that can never be filled, Norm would want to remind us all to live each day to its fullest and value the moments in life rather than the “things”.

A Celebration of Norm’s Life will be organized in Vancouver, BC in the coming weeks.

The family would appreciate that those who wish to express sympathy, consider making a donation to either Heart and Stroke Foundation, Mustard Seed, Calgary, or to plant a tree in Norm’s memory.

We also would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Kananaskis Mountain Rescue, Conservation Officers, EMS, Alpine Helicopters and two incredibly selfless fellow adventurers for their efforts and compassion on the extremely difficult day of Norm’s passing.
