Nancy Maxine Erickson
September 26, 1943 – February 7, 2023
Nancy Maxine Erickson (Shedd) passed away peacefully at Chinook Hospice in Calgary, AB on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at the age of 79. She will be remembered for her great love of animals, her unique sense of humour and style, and her dedication to lifelong learning.
Nancy was born September 26, 1943, in Toronto, ON. She spent her childhood years in Toronto, St. John, New Brunswick, and Bridgewater, Nova Scotia. She received a Bachelor’s degree from Queen’s University, where she met her husband John, and eventually settled into John’s hometown of Thunder Bay to raise her family.
Nancy was passionate about animal welfare and spent many years as President of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and Board Member of the World Society for the Protection of Animals. She also dedicated much of her time to supporting various community groups and causes in Thunder Bay, including the symphony orchestra, the Salvation Army, Magnus Theatre, and Confederation College. She was a devoted member of the Bookends book club for decades, even after moving to Calgary in 2021, and greatly valued the group’s friendships as well as the lively discussions and interesting book selections.
At the age of 46, Nancy decided to go back to school and become a lawyer. She attended Windsor Law School, and, after graduating with the class of 1992, was called to the bar in 1994. Her empathy and tenaciousness made her a force to be reckoned with, and she appeared at all levels of courts in Ontario and represented clients from every province in Canada and the Northwest Territories on several high-profile cases.
Nancy is survived by her children, David (Renee), James Erickson, and Suzanne (Paul) Cavanaugh; her sisters, Kathleen (Chris) Portinari and Beverly (Martin) Buckie; and her six grandchildren, Rachel, Jacob, Brooke, William, Dexter, and Maxine, as well as multiple nieces and nephews. Nancy was predeceased by her husband, John, and her parents, John (“Bev”) and Maxine Shedd.
A Celebration of Nancy’s Life will take place on Friday, March 10, 2023 from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm at Seler Events (28 Cumberland Street N., Thunder Bay, ON). All who wish to attend are invited.
