Obituary for Michael Colin O'Brien

Michael Colin O’Brien
July 28, 1963 - March 5, 2024

It is with sadness that we announce that our brother, Michael took his last breath on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, due to health complications.

Mike was born in Montreal, PQ on July 28, 1963, to parents, Derek and Cynthia (née Mayhew). He was the eldest and only son, followed by sisters, Valerie and Karen.

The family moved to Calgary in 1973 where Mike attended St. Matthew School for Elementary and Junior High and Bishop Grandin High School. He then attended SAIT where he graduated from the Auto Body Mechanic Program; a career which he chose for the rest of his life.

In his younger years, Mike had a passion for raising show pigeons. He was a successful breeder and very proud of his accomplishments. He had a lifelong love for sports from playing hockey and soccer in his youth, to cheering on his favourite wager in the NFL or his favourite horse at the track in his later years.

Mike was an easy-going soul who has gone too soon. Left to mourn his loss are sisters, Valerie (Martin) Hudson and Karen (Thilo) Kaufmann; his many nephews and nieces; friends and colleagues. Mike was predeceased by our father, Derek and our mother, Cynthia. It gives us great comfort knowing that Mom and Dad were there to welcome him home.

No formal service will be held. In lieu, we invite you to gather with friends and raise a glass of Crown Royal and Coke to Mike and remember the good times. Michael cherished his many friendships and considered them to be family.
