Obituary for Mark William McSweeney

McSweeney, Mark William

It is with great sadness that the family of Mark William McSweeney announce his passing in the early hours of Tuesday, May 18, 2021 after a devastating diagnosis of lymphoma, as well as other long-term health issues. Mark lived his life entirely on his own terms and left this world the same way. His loving partner Peggy was his friend and companion, and their later-in-life romance was the source of much laughter and happiness. He had a hippie spirit, with a kind and compassionate nature.

Mark leaves his beloved son Erin, his granddaughter Evelyn, grandson Alex and Mary, his former wife. His father, Gordon and mother, Marjorie, predeceased him. His two sisters, Mary and Coleen McSweeney, who live in Halifax, remember him as a great brother, funny and protective. Mary says he would read the riot act to his friends with any thoughts of dating his sisters. Of course, all her friends were in love with him. There were lots of good family camping trips and a family name he lived up to: ‘Niagra’. Mary enjoyed spending time with him during her business travel to Calgary, from dancing in his long underwear to watching scary movies. “He was a deep thinker and hated injustice. An eccentric with a collection of wonderful friends.”

Mark was proudly Irish, born August 20, 1950 in Kentville, Nova Scotia. Unusually well-travelled, Mark toured most of Europe with his family during his formative years. These experiences fuelled his interest in people from all walks of life. He was a voracious reader, a tireless conversationalist, formidable debater, and had an encyclopaedic knowledge of music and geo-politics. This made for many entertaining parties and "burning wood" on camping trips that would run well into the next day.

Mark was happily retired for many years after working as an electrician. He worked for more than two decades at energy and construction projects in Alberta. Prior to this, he, Erin and Mary lived in Northern Alberta in an "off-grid" community, and in Edmonton, making many life-long friends.

Following Mark’s wishes there will not be a Service, but well-wishers are encouraged to light up in his honour on 4/20.
