Obituary for Peggy Nielsen

Margaret B. Nielsen (nee Bartusek)
March 5, 1940 – November 20, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we share with you the passing of Margaret “Peggy” Nielsen at the age of 82. A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Peggy was born on a farm just outside of Killam, AB.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Doug Nielsen of 60 years; daughter, Shawna (Michael) Forgo; three grandchildren, Chelsea (Michele) Megna, Cassandra Forgo (Travis Lee), and Kyle (Brooklyn) Forgo; three great grandchildren, Safina, Damien, and Oriana; two brothers, Gaynor (Lillian) Bartusek and Gordon Bartusek; as well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Walter and Edith Bartusek; father and mother-in-law, Jim, and Betty Nielsen; daughter, Brenda Coe; and sister-in-law, Val Bartusek.

Peggy and her husband, Doug Nielsen were married in July 1962, in Killam, AB. Peggy first started her working career at the Killam Hospital. From there, she moved to Red Deer and took her Nurse Training at the Michener Centre where she worked for several years. The family then moved to the farm near Carbon, AB. When Peggy and Doug eventually moved into Drumheller, AB, she went to work at both the nursing home as well as Nielsen’s RV Sales and Services. Peggy concluded her career at the Physio Department in the Drumheller Hospital. She loved working and socializing with her patients and co-workers, and the feeling was mutually shared, as she was always a fun and friendly person to be around.

In the earlier years on the farm, she loved horseback riding and spending time with all animals. Peggy loved camping, fishing, gardening, playing cards and watching sports, especially equestrian events, figure skating, the Olympics, and the Calgary Stampede.

Being a grandma (Nana) was the highlight of her life. She was very fond of spending quality time with her grandchildren and spoiling them with her homemade cookies.

Mom will be remembered for her friendly, kind, and caring personality. She was always willing to pitch in and lend a hand to family and friends. Having a family gathering with a nice meal was one of her favorite settings. Mom, you were such an intricate part of our family. You will be missed more than words could ever say.

As per Peggy’s wishes, a formal Funeral Service will not be held. Instead, a Celebration of Peggy’s Life will be held with family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peggy’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society (#200, 325 Manning Rd NE, Calgary, AB T2E 2P5), the SPCA (17904 118 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB, T5S 2W3) or to a charity of your choice.
