Obituary for Linda Heather Barrette (McDiarmid)

LINDA, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on August 13, 2023 following a lengthy illness, with Jim, husband of 24 years by her side.

Linda was a devoted mother to her two boys and devoted to her husband Jim of 24 years. She loved being a grandmother to all her grandchildren whether near or far. She especially loved baking cookies with them no matter how messy the kitchen got to be. She would bring out all the toys she had set away to watch them play on the floor while visiting. It just filled her heart with joy.

She loved cruising the world with Jim. Beginning with a cruise to Alaska, then having been hooked on this style of travel, cruising the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico, the Mediterranean, European and Scandinavian countries, Iceland, Greenland, Brazil around Cape Horne to Santiago, Chile, and finally to the Tahitian islands.

Linda was a natural leader with plenty of drive spending her early career with Sears Canada working her way up to store management and assisted in managing the reconstruction of the Eaton’s downtown store subsequent to the Sear’s takeover. Dedicated and self-assured she had a very successful 30-year career at Sears Canada.

Upon retiring from Sears Canada, Linda took on a new career as a Marriage Commissioner. She loved making people happy and being part of the devotion they professed to one another. As Jim witnessed a number of her ceremonies, he could see that Linda was ‘in her element’. The smile on her face seeing the joy her work brought to each of her clients on their special day.

Linda loved astrology and palm reading. She had the gift. She was very compassionate with a big heart and enjoyed helping people through life’s challenges. She participated in work groups in England, the United States and here at home and developed quite a clientele over the years.

Linda is survived by her sons, Craig (Hala), Mark (Triin); stepchildren, Tim, and Michelle (Michael); grandchildren, Achmed, Mousa, Esa, Aya, Amy, Liam, Ethan, Yvette, and Torin; brother, Peter (Martha) and 4 nieces; adoptive grandchildren, Katy (Danny), Marissa and young James, as well as great-grandchildren, Hattie, and Emy. She was pre-deceased by her parents, Donald and Margaret McDiarmid and sister, Susan (Brian).

In Lieu of flowers, donations in memory will be gratefully accepted by the Southern Alberta Brain Injury Society (SABIS) or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Canada.

A Celebration of Life remembering Linda will be held on Monday September 25, 2023 at 10:00 am at the Al Hazar (Shriner’s) Temple.

She will truly be missed by husband Jim, family and all who knew her.
