Obituary for Leonard Striemer

Leonard Striemer
March 13, 1927 - October 12, 2023

On October 12, 2023, Leonard Striemer of Calgary, Alberta passed away peacefully at the age of 96. He leaves behind a legacy of service, generosity, and faith. His quick wit and infectious smile were endearing to many.

Len was born March 13, 1927 in Plum Coulee, Manitoba to Peter and Katharina Striemer. He was the youngest of 8 children and described himself as an adventurous, mischievous, and spoiled child. He loved to play hockey and baseball and remained a sports fan for life.

In 1944, at the age of 17, Len enlisted in the Canadian Army. After basic training in Saskatoon, the Army decided Len was more suited to an administrative position and he was sent to a business college in Saint John, New Brunswick. His numerical aptitude and the skills he learned at college combined to set the course for his career in accounting.

On July 30, 1976 Len married the love of his life, Evelyn Johnson. They resided in Winnipeg until 1991 when Len retired from his role as Office Manager at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg. After retiring, Len and Ev moved to Kelowna and enjoyed an active lifestyle including walking, camping, and picnicking in the many beautiful parks. They were very generous and had a strong faith in God that was shown through their involvement in their church and other ministries. After Evelyn’s passing in 2017, Len moved to Calgary to be closer to family. Len was happy when he had a good book to read and a full coffee cup.

He is survived by brothers and sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, and grand-nieces.
Len was pre-deceased by his wife, Evelyn; parents, Peter and Katharina; siblings, Rose, Peter, Mary, Harry, Yvonne, Anne, and Madeline.

Donations may be made in Len’s memory to Canadian Foodgrains Bank.
