Obituary for Leo Lamartino D'Souza

Leo Lamartino D'Souza
April 11, 1941 - May 4, 2020

It is with heavy hearts and overwhelming sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father Leo D'Souza at the Holy Cross Manor in Calgary on Monday, May 4, 2020. Leo passed away peacefully at the age of 79, with his wife of almost 53 years by his side.

Leo was the cherished and devoted husband of Maria (nee Lobo) and the loving father of Flavia (Aylward), Susan (Savio), and Ryan (Nancy) as well as grandfather of Sylvester. Leo was predeceased by his parents Maria Caitana and Romualdo D'Souza and was the dear brother of Flora (Sartos), Sunny (Cynthia), Simon (deceased) / (Sylvia), and Henry (deceased). He was also the brother-in-law of Michael (deceased), Alex (Philomena) and Georgie (Libby) and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.

Leo was born on April 11, 1941 in Goa, India. He began his career in Bombay and then moved to Uganda and Abu Dhabi before immigrating to Halifax, Canada in 1994 with his family to provide his children with greater opportunities. Leo worked extremely hard to provide the best for his family. He was honest, dedicated, diligent, hard-working, loved by numerous friends and extended family. His charity, generosity, zest for life and love not only for his wife and children, but also his extended family and friends will leave many of them with fond memories. His retirement activities included swimming laps at the YMCA, cooking, gardening, fishing, entertaining family and friends. A self-taught handyman and jack of all trades, Leo enjoyed working on his home projects. Although he was proudly Canadian, Leo also had strong affiliation to his cultural heritage and the roots he came from. He enjoyed many days with family in Goa, Panchgani, Bombay, Abu Dhabi, Halifax, and his final home in Calgary. Leo dedicated his life to taking care of Maria's needs after she suffered a stroke in 1985 and worked his hardest to look after her in the best way he knew. With God’s grace, Maria did her best to care for Leo since 2012 when he was diagnosed with parkinson’s. Leo and Maria loved each other to the last moment when on May 4, 2020, Leo passed away peacefully with Maria by his side.

The family would like to thank the staff at Holy Cross Manor for the excellent care and compassion they provided to Leo during his illness.
