Obituary for John Kaufman

John Kaufman, a man who lived life to the fullest, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 5, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 95. A private celebration of life “Aloha style”, was held shortly after at one of John’s favorite places “A Golf Club”. Born in Yugoslavia, John immigrated to Canada with his parents, John and Mary Kaufman in 1928. They settled in Regina, Saskatchewan, where John spent most of his life.

John was a people person who had a great sense of humour and could make anyone laugh. He loved motorcycles, cars, snowmobiles, boating, hunting, and fishing trips with his friends in Northern Saskatchewan. He was also very sporty, playing on basketball and hockey teams, but his favorite sport was curling with friends. John was a Saskatchewan Roughrider Fan and a season ticket holder for 41 years on the 50-yard line. He also enjoyed watching soccer, hockey, and the NFL.

John was an insurance man who started his career as an adjuster with SGI. In 1962, he opened up his own brokerage, Niesner Kaufman Agency, with his partner in real estate, Adam Niesner. It was one of the most successful insurance brokerages in Regina, winning many awards and recognitions throughout the years until he retired in 2003.

In 1961 John met the love of his life, Deanna, at the Ford Motor Corp, and they eloped in Coeur d’Alene and were married on April 30, 1962. They raised four wonderful children and created a family oasis at home where they had many wonderful summers with family and friends. John gave his children the opportunity to try and be anything they wanted to be. In the winter, they would escape to Maui for the best family holidays over Christmas. That became his second favorite home in the world, The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach. His greatest golf moments happened on the Kaanapali golf course, where he made a hole in one!

In 2003, John retired, and they moved to Calgary to spend more time with their kids and grandchildren. Retirement was busy with lots of golfing, gardening, winters in Maui, and cruises with his family. John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Deanna; his three children, Brenda, Sandra (Craig), Robert (Carla); and ten grandchildren, Mahlia, Brittany, Mathew, Christel, Max, Alexa, Sierra, Tyra, Kate, and Logan. He was pre-deceased by his son, John Edward Kaufman.

John will be remembered for his love of life, his sense of humour, and his ability to make anyone feel comfortable. John will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him.
