Obituary for John Allan Fidler

John Fidler
August 22nd, 1942 - Tuesday, March 14th, 2023

John passed into the next world peacefully and with family at his side. His last phone call was with his daughter and his leaving coincided with his final anointing with holy chrism.

John was born on August 22, 1942, the youngest child of Ida and George Fidler. His older siblings, Walter and Carol, welcomed him into their hearts and home in Pembroke, Ontario. His mother was an Algonquin woman who taught school and his father, a Metis man, was a cook in the army. The family moved to Hinton, where, under his mother’s guidance, John took his education.

John married his first wife, Shirley, in Calgary, Alberta. They had two sons, Ronald and Parker (Raelene). Sadly, Shirley died after a valiant battle with cancer. His sons, however, played major roles in John’s life; he and Ronald were good pals and Parker was at his bedside, holding his hand, when he died.

John and Juanita met in 1984. Their relationship lasted forty years. As in all long term relationships, there were days of sorrow and days of joy, but they stood by one another. Together, they had one daughter, Tania, who he cherished.

John was a hard, diligent worker. He spent the last few decades of his working life as an insulator, well thought of by his employer. He rose to the level of foreman and was fair to all. He mentored his staff in the trade and was proud of the company he worked for.

John excelled as a friend. Whether one needed a fence painted, a car boosted or a flat tire replaced, he was there to help.

John loved playing cards, going to the race track, barbecuing steaks and tossing a ball around in the back yard. When city life proved too hard, he spent time in Hinton with his sister, her husband and his nephews and nieces.

John was a good step-father and provider to his step children, Lisa, Nadine and Shane, who lovingly returned his love with tender care in his older years. He was also a dutiful son to Juanita’s mother and held her in high esteem.

John was predeceased by his parents, siblings and a rainbow granddaughter, Lovely Anne. His sons, stepchildren and their children, Kurtis, Celina and Kevin, survive him. He also leaves his grandson, Anthony, extended family in Hinton (Glen, Alden, Dave, Colleen, Shelley and his special buddy, Darren ) and others who loved him, including Kevin, Pat and Darlene

John went to his final rest on good terms with the world and with God.
