Obituary for Joan Harriet Emily Schroeder (Hardiman)
We regretfully announce the passing of our mother Joan Schroeder on Sunday, January 22, 2023 at the Rockyview General Hospital in Calgary, AB.
Joan was born on February 24, 1943 to James and Dorothy in Shelburne, Nova Scotia. As a young adult, she left Nova Scotia to live in the USA and later to Ramstein Germany where she worked at the Canadian Airforce Base. While working in Ramstein, she met the love of her life, Manfred and eventually married in 1967. They had their first daughter, Angela in 1969 and in 1972 they moved to Nova Scotia where they had their second daughter, Karina in 1973. In 1977 they moved to Calgary and although this remained home, Nova Scotia was always in her heart.
Joan was a wonderful and loving mother who gave all to her family. Her grandchildren were her everything and they affectionately referred to her as Mamma. Joan had quit working so she could dedicate her time to watching her four grandchildren full time. The hole left by her absence is impossible to fill.
Joan was an avid reader and loved puzzle books. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, painting and baking. All who knew her could easily see that she had an undeniable sweet tooth that never went away. Joan loved to go out for food with her family, but always breakfast or brunch where the usual order was Eggs Benedict. We will miss those outings tremendously.
After her husband Manfred passed away in 2021 she moved to an independent seniors building (Cathedral Manor) where she met so many wonderful people she called friends. Thank you to all of you who spent time with her and loved her.
She is survived by her two daughters, Angela and Karina (Christopher) and her four grandchildren, Ashley, Chet, Natasha and Brittany. Joan was predeceased by her parents James, Charles (stepfather) and Dorothy; her husband, Manfred and her sister, Donna.
We would like to thank the staff on Unit 74 at Rockyview Hospital for the kindness and care they showed Joan.
