Obituary for Jean Lim Liu

Jean Mee Fong Lim Liu
September 09, 1934 - October 22, 2022

Jean was born in the province of Guangdong, China. Her father was killed during the Sino-Japanese War when she was very young. Her mother, who never remarried, raised her little girl who eventually grew up to go to university in Hong Kong for one year. At the time, her mother's friends fretted because it was very unusual.

She met her future husband, John Wing Chong Liu, when they were teenagers. His father brought him to one of the neighboring villages and put him by the girls' high school, basically instructing his son to "pick one." He spotted Jean. The two families met and made an agreeable arrangement for them to marry. He was 17. She was 15.

Her post-secondary education was cut short when Canada removed the head tax and John brought his bride to Montreal, Canada. There they raised one daughter, Joanny and two younger sons, James and Daniel.

She is survived by her husband John, her three grown children, two grandsons, and two great-grand-children. She led a long life, with some tragedy and disappointments, but lots more good fortune. She loved cruises and traveled often back to China to visit relatives. Rest in peace.
