Obituary for Gwendolyn Van Winkle (McKethen)

Gwendolyn Van Winkle
September 15th, 1924 - October 24th, 2019

Gwenne was born in High River, Alberta and passed away in Calgary at Holy Cross Manor at the age of 95. It is with mixed emotions we mourn the loss of our mother. (Son Duane and Sandy, Daughter Randy and Dave, Four Grandsons and Ten Great Grandchildren)

Yet we know she is free of all her frailties and discomfort. She has found her eternal salvation thanks to the grace and forgiveness of Jesus her Saviour. And she is enjoying her reward for a life well lived serving her Lord.

Gwenne was raised on the family farm in the Community of Meadow Bank and moved to High River to finish her schooling. She enjoyed participating in sports and was very successful in local track meets, and pitched for the Girls Softball Team.

Gwenne learned her good work ethic from her parents and extended family as they worked hard on their farms. During the War she worked at the High River Airport caring for the switch board and working in the cafeteria.

Gwenne also loved to paint and took lessons from Annora Brown a well known Canadian Artist who lived in Fort MacLeod. These were very happy and exciting times as she developed her artistry under Annora’s guidance.

In the early 50’s they moved to the Family farm in Meadow Bank and experienced the ups and downs of Farming. She worked hard to keep the house, care for the Children and help her husband with the chores, harvest and the regular farm work.

In March of 77 Gwen started her Nursing at Foothills Pediatrics and nursed there till 82 and then went to Children’s Hospital till September of 86. Following that she did private Nursing care for individuals up until the early 1990s. She enjoyed good health and times with her Family over her retirement years.

We want to thank the Staff at Holy Cross Covenant Care for their care and compassion of our Mother over the past four years.

A Family Memorial will be held on Novmeber 24th and Internment will be in High River next summer at the McKethen Family grave site.
