Obituary for Gregory Ronald Harry Schild

Gregory Ronald Harry Schild

It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Gregory (Greg) Ronald Harry Schild, age 38, beloved Brother, Son, and Grandson, on July 26, 2022 from complications of diabetes. He is survived by his parents, Ron and Melanie Schild, (Calgary) his sister Allison Metz, (Calgary), and his Grandparents, Harry and Sheila Schild (Ladysmith, BC).
Greg began his life in Victoria, BC on July 8, 1984. His sister was born 3 years later. Although at first Greg was not impressed with his new sibling, over the years they became best friends and a mutual support team as they navigated the ups and downs of life.

As he grew up on Vancouver Island, Greg developed a love of water – ocean, lake and river. He became an excellent swimmer, and later, a scuba diver. One of his favorite destinations was Maple Bay, not far from Duncan, BC, where he and his sister enjoyed some of the same experiences that were written about by Oceanographer, Jacques Cousteau, who also considered this one of his favorite diving areas. He also had an affinity for cats, as his friends and family can attest to.
Greg moved with his family in 1998 to Calgary, AB, where he completed high school. He always appreciated learning about the diversified cultures and nationalities of the classmates he attended school with, and he was respected and had friends from all walks of life. As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses from the age of 14, he appreciated God’s view of people and treated all with dignity and kindness. He was well liked. Greg graduated Lester B. Pearson High School in June 2001.

It was in junior high school that he was introduced to the music program where he learned to play the trumpet. Music became his outlet and passion that grew as he attended high school. He became a talented guitarist, taught himself the keyboard, and composed and recorded several discs of songs, that although never commercially published, were distributed to supportive individuals by the hundreds of copies in the U.S. and Canada.

Greg liked to challenge himself. Although naturally right-handed, he read that many musicians and artists, creative people, were left-handed. He decided to learn to write left-handed, and after months of practice and several full writing pads, he was able to write as well with his left hand as with his right. He became fully ambidextrous. He often wowed his Asian friends by eating with chopsticks in both hands, and he could use most tools with either hand. His signature was usually done with his left hand.

He also loved to travel. Although finances and, more recently, the Pandemic got in the way, Greg visited numerous areas of the U.S., Mexico, and Asia, his most extensive and favorite trip being to Korea, China, and Hong Kong. Due no doubt to his musical ear, and his interest in the people around him, he found it easy to pick up foreign languages. He knew phrases and greetings in Spanish, Greek, Tagalog, Korean, and Chinese in two dialects. When he went to China, he had learned enough Chinese that he could barter in their shops. He was such a tenacious negotiator that at least one shop owner, after agreeing to a sale, turned to his Asian friend and asked him to leave and take his Caucasian friend with him. The shop owner was unhappy that the deal cost him money.

Greg attended S.A.I.T., receiving his diploma in Business Administration in April, 2005. After spending a few years in the Accounting field, Greg went back to S.A.I.T. to complete his degree. He graduated with Honors, earning his Bachelor of Business Administration in Aug. 2018. He was invited and accepted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society for his efforts. During that time he was assisting many of his fellow students with their classes, especially those who were challenged in the English language.

However, after another two years in the Accounting field, Greg came to the realization that Accountants are supposed to be “in the box” people. He wasn’t. With the urging of his sister, a journeyman electrician, he decided to try out the trades, found out that he enjoyed the variety and challenge in being an electrician, and was well into his second year of his apprenticeship when he died. His first-year apprenticeship marks were in the 90% range. His Accounting training didn’t hurt when he was asked to organize and inventory materials on a jobsite.

Greg’s religious beliefs were important to him. As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses he regularly participated in the Ministry, and especially felt comfortable in speaking to friends and workmates about the hope he had. He believed that our Creator was going to bring better conditions to the Earth, an end to sickness, including diabetes, and the reversal of death in a resurrection. As the Bible states at Rev. 21:4 “(God) will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning, nor outcry, nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.” Greg believed this is his future. His family believes this as well and take comfort in the hope of the resurrection.

Greg was a kind and caring person, a dear friend to many people, a loving son and brother. His smile and quick wit, his willingness to pitch in and help, his talent and abilities will be missed.

A Memorial service will be held online by way of Zoom and all who knew Greg are invited - Monterey Park is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
