Obituary for Gordon Newton Walker

Gordon Newton Walker
September 19 1928 - April 8 2022

It is with relief, but sadness, that the family of Gordon Newton Walker announces his passing on Friday, April 8th 2022, after a struggling for over a year following a massive stroke. Gord passed away in his sleep, surrounded by his loved ones. Gord had a great passion for life and cared deeply for those around him. He was a loving husband to Jackie, a father, a grandfather and a great grandfather.

The love of Gord’s life was Jackie Walker (nee, Wheeler). They were Jr high school sweethearts and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in August 2021. They had two children together in Winnipeg. They eventually moved to Calgary where they spent the past 60 years. Gord thought the sun rose and set on Jackie and devoted his whole life to her. Theirs was a lifelong love affair, to which few can compare.

Gordon was a committed Rotarian for almost 50 years. He was proud to serve his term as President of the Downtown Calgary Rotary Club, for 1990/91. He loved participating in the musical theater performances. He had a lifelong love of music and was often singing odd bits songs to those around him. He and Jackie were also heavily involved in the fundraising BBQ’s and the Stay in School Campaign. He was awarded the prestigious Paul Harris fellowship award, twice.

Gordon loved the game of golf! On weekends, he could often be found on the golf course with his fellow Rotarian's. Gordon spent 45 years of his life running Par-T-Golf International, with his son, Murray and his wife, Jackie. Prior to that, he spent over 20 years in the radio business.

Gordon was a devoted family man and could often be found telling stories about “The Good Old Days” to his wife, Jackie Walker; his son, Murray Walker (Anne); his daughter, Jonnie Walker-Hester (Herschel); his two grandchildren, Sarah Storm (Jason) and Jena Walker-Lineker (David); and his great grandchildren, Liam Storm and Isabell Lineker. He will also be greatly missed by his honorary, adopted family, Sunny and Sunmi Cho and their two children Elliot, and Kimball.

His family will be hosting a Celebration of Gordon’s Life at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary (2425 – 9 Avenue SE, Calgary, AB) on Monday April 18, 2022 from 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm.

To honour his years of dedication to the Calgary Rotary Club, the family has suggested in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in Gordon’s memory to The Downtown Rotary Club Of Calgary’s Ukrainian Relief Fundraiser Rotary Club of Calgary or to any of their other worthy programs. You are also invited, to wear blue or yellow, the colours of Rotary International and the Ukrainian flag.
