Obituary for Golden Marguerite Christie

Golden Marguerite Christie
April 30, 1925 – December 12, 2022 (97 years)

Golden Marguerite Christie of Calgary, AB, passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family on December 12th, 2022 at the age of 97 years.

Golden was born near Loreburn, Saskatchewan in an area where her grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles had homesteaded. Her younger years were spent surrounded by family, including too many cousins to count. The Depression was hard on the area and many moved away. Her parents moved to Rouleau in 1934, where she met lifelong friends.

Golden trained as an RN at the Regina Grey Nuns Hospital. She won a medal in Pediatric Nursing and her photo was in the paper, which is where Bryce first saw her and decided he had to meet her. They were married a year later and had 63 wonderful years together.

She worked in both the US and Canada and, once her children were grown, finished her career at Student Health at the UofC. She had a calling to service and was always there to take care and check in on those who needed it. When her sister-in-law passed away suddenly, she and Bryce took in Ann’s two youngest children and cared for them for months at a time until their father remarried. She loved Eric and Andrew and enjoyed every minute with them.

Golden and Bryce loved their daughters, supported them in their pursuits and encouraged them to be strong independent women. Their home was a gathering place for everyone, friends of the girls were always welcome. Their children's friends became their friends too.

Golden was curious about the world and loved to travel and meet new people. In retirement she and Bryce saw many of the world’s wonders. She stood in front of the Great Pyramids, on top of Machu Picchu, under the Christ de Rio, walked along the Great Wall of China, and went to too many other places to mention. She loved her beaches and put together an impressive collection of sand from every beach and desert she ever visited.

Golden was an engaged Gran, who enjoyed her Grandchildren and then, as GG, her Great Grandchildren very much. They always had a space in her home and were welcome any time. She spoiled them with time and experiences like going to West Edmonton Mall, Fairmont Hot Springs, Camping or just out for ice cream. She had a real connection with children and always took time to listen to the littlest voice in the room.

Golden was an excellent conversationalist and could talk in terms of anyone’s interests. She enjoyed sports and could cheer along with a crowd. She loved music and liked to dance. She could discuss History, Geography, Science, Philosophy, Politics and Current Affairs, she enjoyed hearing from other perspectives. She had a thirst for learning and attended adult classes at the University for many of her senior years.

Golden had an energy that brightened up everything and everyone around her. People were drawn to her. She was most comfortable in the company of others. She made everyone feel special and important. She was someone who you remembered meeting and felt better for the experience.
She will be remembered for the way she lit up every room she entered, seeing everyone and making them feel welcome.

After many years of increasing pain, Golden planned her passing surrounded by those closest to her. She spent the previous week saying goodbye to family and close friends, who felt privileged to have the opportunity to laugh, cry and reminisce with her one last time.

She leaves behind daughter, Jill (David Page); granddaughter, Christie (Aaron Stayner); great granddaughters, Sukey George and Bryce Stayner; and grandson; Jack Page; daughter, Cindy (Gary Imler); grandson, Cole Imler (Deana); great grandchildren, Ruth and Clyde Imler; granddaughter, Kelsey (Cort Buntain); great grandchildren, Blake and Arli Buntain. Golden was predeceased by her beloved husband, Bryce Boyd Christie in 2010; her parents, Sam and Ethel Jack; and her siblings, Ross Jack and Patricia Jack.

A Celebration of Golden’s Life will be held on Monday, April 17, 2023 at 12:30 at Red Deer Lake United Church (96187 Spruce Meadows Green SW, Foothills, AB, T1S 2R9). To view and share photos, condolences and memories of Golden, please visit www.choicememorial.com.
