Obituary for Gertrude Margaret Cain (Helten)

Gertrude Margaret Cain
October 27, 1940 – January 8, 2024

Gertrude M Cain, known as Trudy, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 8, 2024 at the age of 83.

She will be dearly missed by her husband of 52 years, Michael Cain; daughters, Carole Biltz and EvaMarie Padmanabhan (Kumar); 12 grandchildren; as well as her sisters, Maureen, Doris, Carol and brother Glenn. Trudy was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Minnie Helten; brothers, Ralph (in infancy), Gerry, Pat; and sister, Mona.

Trudy was born in 1940, the seventh of nine children and grew up in the little German-Catholic farming community of Heisler, in central Alberta, South East of Camrose. She studied nursing and graduated as an R.N. from St. Joseph’s Hospital in Vegreville, the third of four Helten sisters to do so. She worked as a nurse at several hospitals in Alberta including the Rockyview and Col. Belcher. She had some inclination to the religious life and was briefly a novice nun in Toronto.

Trudy married Michael Cain in 1971. They lived all of their married life and raised their daughters in the Cedarbrae area of Calgary. There were many weekends and holidays at their cabin near Eureka, Montana. From there, they skied together as a family for many years at Fernie and Whitefish. They greatly enjoyed and were closely bonded with their many grandchildren.

Throughout her life, Trudy was a strong Catholic, always eager to share and discuss her Faith with any who were interested.

The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff of the Good Samaritan Clearwater Centre in Rocky Mountain House where Trudy was given good and loving care for the last 22 months.

The funeral Divine Liturgy will be held at St. Stephen Protomartyr Ukrainian Catholic Church (4903 45th St. SW Calgary) on Monday, January 15 at 11 AM. A Reception will follow at the Choice Memorial Funeral Home, 243256 Garden Road (aka 100 Street) NE Calgary, T1X 1G2.
