Obituary for Gerald Michael Jumaga

Jumaga, Gerald "Jerry" Michael

Gerald “Jerry” Michael Jumaga was born September 15, 1933 in Verigin Saskatchewan and died Saturday, December 26 in Calgary; he was 87. Jerry was the eldest child of Anne and Walter Jumaga’s four children; his siblings are Donald (Sylvia), David and Mary Jane (Stanley). As descendants of settlers from the Ukraine, Jerry was raised in a family that lived a hard working, loving and faith-based life, and these qualities were imbued in him. In his mid 20s, Jerry moved to Saskatoon where he married Melvina Siroishka, and there they had their first child Mark (Melanie). A short time later, Jerry’s work with Robin Hood Flour took the family to Calgary where they had three more children, Janice (Mark), Jolayn (Ben) and Grant (Agata). It was a short time after Janice’s birth that a lengthy illness beset Melvina, one that at the time no one could properly understand or resolve. Jerry’s marriage to Melvina came to an end a few years after Grant’s birth.

A true entrepreneur at heart, Jerry established his own insurance brokerage agency and followed this up by becoming a lawyer with his own law practice. It was in law school that Jerry met Kathleen Luna, “Casey”; they would marry and together have a daughter, Jacqueline.

During the mid 80s and in partnership with Jolayn, Jerry entered the realm of restaurant ownership. After a few years this transitioned from a father-daughter venture into a joint husband-wife business with Casey. This business would occupy Jerry’s daily life for over 30 years, with the doors closing in 2017. During the later decades of Jerry’s life, he was blessed with 8 grandchildren, Mackenzie, Kate, Nicholas, Adam, Natasha, Jessica, Scarlett and Clay.

Jerry’s passing leaves a giant hole in the family. He was our Rock of Gibraltar, always there for us and known for his patience, fairness, steadfastness, smarts, his love of beekeeping, a good joke and a game of golf, and his ability to make a powerful and impassioned speech. We will miss Jerry immensely. To view and share photos, condolences and memories of Jerry, please visit www.choicememorial.com.
