Obituary for Elizabeth Louise Wood

Elizabeth Wood

Elizabeth Wood (nee Moore), long standing resident of the community of Brentwood in Calgary, Alberta passed away suddenly on September 13, 2020 at the honourable age of 91 years.

Elizabeth was born to Ralph and Myrtle Moore (nee Biggs) in Trochu Alberta on July 30, 1929. She was raised within the rolling hills of Kneehill Valley. Elizabeth moved to Red Deer and then to Calgary with the Alberta Treasury Branch where she met the love of her life Douglas Wood. Douglas was playing tennis when a ball went astray and just happened to fall at Elizabeth’s feet. Douglas fell in love at first sight and they subsequently relished 64 years of marriage together.

Elizabeth never lost her love of the farm, with cherished memories of growing up with her 4 brothers, parents and cousins. Elizabeth loved gardening in Calgary with her flowers, saskatoon bushes, and cherry and apple trees, which were shared with family and friends. Her life was spent raising her family with love and devotion, but it was further enriched by working as a receptionist with Dr. John Quine at the NW Veterinary Clinic and at the family business, Wood’s Leather Goods. It was family, friends and neighbours, however, that were the ultimate treasures to Elizabeth (affectionately known as Betty); her eyes would light up when children were around. She would often share her own childhood memories of playing softball, competing in Barrel Races at the Red Deer Fair, walking 3 miles to the 1 room schoolhouse at Mount Pleasant, picking berries on the ‘north ridge’ and attending dances in Pine Lake.

Elizabeth will be sadly missed by her family: daughters Maureen (Robin) and Karen (Rick), and sons Michael (Colleen) and Christopher (Karen), as well as her remaining sibling Donald, sister-in-law Mildred, her 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Douglas, son Timothy, her newborn daughter Shawn, as well as her brothers Everett, Walter (Anne), and Lloyd. Sincere thanks to Dr(s) Jeremy DeBruyn and Simon Arthur, AHS-Homecare and the staff at We Care for their excellent care over the years.

Due to Covid, Elizabeth’s Ice Cream Social will be limited to 50 registered guests at Kensington Commons Church (2404 Kensington Rd NW) on Sunday, September 27, 2020 at 2:00 pm.
