Obituary for Edith Joan Mackasey (Ortner)

MACKASEY, Edith Joan (nee Ortner)
1932 - 2020

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce that our dear Mom and Nana, Joan Mackasey, age 87 of Calgary, AB, has passed on to join her Lord and our father John in heaven on Thursday, April 16, 2020.

Joan will be missed and lovingly remembered by her two children, Wendy (Rick) Bunney of Edmonton and Michael (Judy) Mackasey; her dear granddaughter, Manon of Sooke, BC; brother, Clyde (Carol) Ortner; nieces and nephews, Julie (David) Boyes, Gerry Ortner, and Lea Anne (George) Kulai from B.C, and Heather (Scott) Draper as well as numerous nieces and nephews of Ontario and Nova Scotia.

Joan was born to the late Gerald and Edith Ortner of Trail, BC on June 15, 1932 and grew up in Trail. She went to school graduating in 1950 and continued her education at University of Alberta and Business College.

Joan began her working career as a secretary in Kitimat, BC where she met her future husband John, and later married in Trail on September 9, 1956. Together the began their great adventure and lived in various communities across Western Canada with John's work, including Kemano & Kitimat, BC, Cranberry Portage, Thompson & Winnipeg, MB, and finally in Calgary where they settled and eventually retired. Mom made many lifelong friends through these years and treasured each and every one.

After moving to Calgary, Joan met her calling as a para legal which she enjoyed very much. In retirement, Joan kept busy with many activities with her bridge games at the top of the list. Golfing at Pinebrook was another passion and Joan's " Hole in One" concluded with many happy patrons in the clubhouse at the end of the day! Between art classes, traveling, volunteering with Rotarians, and visiting with family & friends (long live the lady’s happy hour!) Mom was always on the go. Joan was named a Paul Harris Fellow from the Rotary International Foundation and we were all very proud for her accomplishment.

Joan's family would like to extend a thank you to all the doctors and lovely nurses and caregivers on unit 102 at Foothills Hospital for their kind and compassionate care they gave to Mom.

Due the current restrictions on any gatherings, we will announce a Memorial Service for Joan at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, if desired, a donation in Joan’s memory to a charity of your choice or to the Rosedale Hospice, 920 - 7A Street NW, Calgary, AB T2M 3J3, would be appreciated.

We will miss you terribly Mom,
Love Wendy, Rick, Michael, Judy and Manon.
