Obituary for Brian Richard Weston

Brian Weston
April 7th, 1935 - Saturday, February 25th, 2023

Brian Weston, beloved husband of Ayla Weston, passed away on the evening of Saturday, February 25th, 2023 after a brief struggle with pneumonia. He was the loving father of Erol (Cathy Kopec) of Calgary, Selma (Emmanuel Guigard) of Edmonton, Erim of Vancouver, and Leyla (Jeff Bond) of Whitehorse. Brian will be lovingly remembered by his brother Roy (Sheina Weston) of England, and his sister-in-law Fatma (Charles Mueller) of Vancouver. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren Kyra, Teigan, Lauren, Camille, Matisse, Sofia, and Sullivan. Brian also leaves behind his loving nieces and nephews Ian, Brian, Peter, Catherine, Melih, Leyla, Yasemin, Tanya, and Leticia. Brian was predeceased by his brother Eric (Marie Weston) and nephew Alain Mueller.

Brian was born in the town of Northampton, England to Richard and Emily Weston. He was the youngest of three boys, his bothers Eric and Roy, 10 and 7 years his elder, respectively. Brian was an adventure seeker, leaving England in his early twenties for a brief stint in Austria. He landed in Canada in 1957 to complete a degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Ottawa. In 1963, Brian met the love of his life Ayla – and so began his very full life. After only three months of courtship, he proposed to Ayla and she said yes! They married in 1963 and began their journey of over 60 years together in true partnership. Together they built a successful business and raised their four children. Brian had a passion for languages, and passed this on to all his children. Many hours of night classes were spent with his son Erim learning Russian, as well as Italian with his daughters Selma and Leyla. Being the practical man that he was, Brian viewed taking Italian with his daughter Selma as an investment in his retirement, as he hoped she would eventually go on to marry an Italian Prince! Brian was a true scientist at heart, as was shown by his curious mind and his enthusiasm for books and reading. He was a wonderful conversationalist and loved to engage on any topic, especially if it might involve a wee debate! Brian was also an entrepreneur, and always encouraged his children to seize any opportunity that might come their way. He passed this quality to his son Erol by supporting him in his first business venture – a garbage pick-up enterprise for the rural residents near Carp. The business proved rather lucrative as Brian had suspected, and it wasn’t long before the Township of West Carleton caught on and took over! Brian was also a proud engineer and hated waste; he was composting and recycling long before people had really heard the terms. He was extremely practical, and would often return home from a dump run with another small appliance to fix!

Brian equally enjoyed his quiet time, and found much solace in gardening. He loved to spend his summer weekends in his potato garden in Carp, and later in retirement, in the backyard cherry orchard in France. Brian was a no-fuss man and enjoyed the simple things in life. He was also a wonderful host who made time to welcome new friends with a warm heart. As quoted from a dear friend of his:

“Brian knew what he liked and would hold out for what he wanted. He really liked his stuff. The new house in Carp did not need a garage, it needed a tractor!”

If friends desire, a donation in Brian’s memory may be made to The Fragile X Foundation of Canada.
