Obituary for Anthony Edward Harckham

Anthony Edward Harckham
April 13th, 1942 – October 28th, 2023

Semper impiger, in montibus illuminavi

“There will be a huge space left in the world by a wonderful man who achieved so much in all his endeavors.”
This has been a common refrain from those expressing their condolences.

Anthony was born in Hampshire, England where his family had been evacuated during the war. He attended school in a small town in Hampshire and then pursued a degree in physics at Southampton University. To complete his PhD, Anthony moved to Manchester to join a group working in High Energy Physics. It was while he was volunteering at a youth club that he met his future wife Faith, who had recently returned from working in the US.

Faith and Anthony married in 1968 and moved to Geneva, where Anthony worked for a year at CERN. They moved back to the north of England where he held positions teaching at 2 Universities before he and Faith headed to Edmonton with their 2 young children. He worked for 15 years with Telus (AGT as was). In 1995 the couple moved to their beloved mountains; Canmore becoming and remaining, home. There he established a consultancy business in information technology. He also became involved with designing, building and then distributing solar powered lanterns for rural villages in developing countries. He recently estimated that he had assembled 11,000 lanterns in the basement of his home. We know that he hopes this work will continue.

Anthony gave so much to his family; wife Faith; son, Mathew (Natasha), daughter Rebecca (Chris), and his four teenaged grandsons; Max, Isaac, Sam, and Niko. His wisdom, love knowledge, dry sense of humor, and thoughtfulness will be sorely missed as well as his consideration for his family and friends. His emphasis in later years was on the environment and conservation. Travel became a thing of the past and he chose a green burial which was attended by family on October 31st. A celebration of life will be held in the Spring on the Grotto Trails which he walked daily. Anthony cherished these outings right until the end of his life, walking over 8,000 kilometers with his dogs.

We will miss you so much.
