Obituary for Anne Mearlene McDonald (Ferris)

Anne Mearlene June (Ferris) McDonald passed away from complications due to old age on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, in Foothills Hospital, Calgary, Alberta.

Anne was born on June 8, 1935, in Oxbow, Saskatchewan, the sixth child and second daughter of George Arthur Ferris and Blanche Ryan. Her older sister and an older brother died in their first year of life long before she was born, so she was essentially the first girl of the family, born six years after her closest brother Don (Ferris) and 2.5 years before her younger sister Eila. Anne was a child when her two oldest brothers Deb and Bud (Ferris) enlisted in WW2. Anne moved from Oxbow to the Town of Bowness in 1953 at the age of 18 and began working as a bank teller in downtown Calgary.

Anne married Stanley Elwood McDonald (d.2003) in Calgary in 1955 and together they raised 5 children: Debbie (d. 2015), Randy, Sandy, Arthur (d.1989) and Daniel. In addition to three children, Anne is also survived by her sister, Eila MacDonald, her sister-in-law Judy McDonald, her son-in-law Gord, 4 beloved grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and numerous Ferris, Ryan, MacDonald and McDonald cousins, nieces, and nephews. Anne was gifted with an ability to make friends and cheer people.

She was a compassionate soul who was awarded a 25 year service honor from the Tom Baker Cancer Centre in Calgary for her volunteer work caring for patients. She had a long career in real estate and lived in Bowness or near Bowness most of her adult life. She was active in the Bowness United Church and the Bowness community. Life gave Anne many difficult trials and challenges, but you would never know meeting her. She was always ready with a cheerful greeting, an Auntie’s kiss, and a lot of sharing about events and people in her life. She loved to visit! She is missed deeply by friends and family.

Upon Anne’s request there will be no funeral service. Internment to follow in the spring. Until we meet again, may God’s love be with each of us.
