Obituary for Amelia Helena Kubok

Amelia Helena Kubok
August 27, 1928 - March 17, 2023

Amelia Kubok, beloved friend, Aunt and Sister-in-Law, passed away at her home in Calgary on Friday, March 17, 2023 at the age of 94 years.

She was a lifelong friend and partner in adventures of Josie Bazant; sister-in-law to Laszlo Toth (Sophie, d.2022), and cherished “Ciocia Mela” (Aunt) to Leslie Toth Junior (Susan, d.2022), Christopher Toth, Robert Toth (Andrea Toth), Helen Sedran (Trevor), Ursula Kubok (Trevor Bacon), Natalie Kubok (Dwayne Norman); Great Aunt to Nicole Melanson (Kyle), Brienne Toth (David Piraux), Erik Hohmann, Evan Sedran, Nina Hohmann, Jared Sedran, and Maisie Toth; Great Great Aunt to Zander, Dominic and Brandon of Calgary. She was predeceased by brother, John Kubok; sister, Sophie Toth (Laszlo Toth); niece, Susan Toth (Leslie Toth); her parents, and many family and friends

Amelia lived an exceptionally vibrant and long life, rich in cherished friendships, time spent with family, and many adventures travelling and experiencing the world. She was born in Poland in 1928, and by the age of 14 during World War 2, was moving through refugee camps in London, Siberia, and Tanzania with her mother, aunt, and sister Sophie. After many years, they arrived in Canada to the Urban family farm outside Edmonton and were later joined by her brother John.

Amelia resided only briefly at the farm before moving to Edmonton and finding work as a manufacturing line worker with Celanese, where she remained employed until her retirement. She lived by herself her entire life, enjoying her independence, self-reliability, and all the experiences this enabled. She developed and maintained a rich social life, filled with many friends from all walks of life and backgrounds - and was always ready for a glass of wine and good conversation, any gathering of friends or family was a reason to celebrate.

Her joy for life and broad-minded interest in the world led her to travel the world, often during times and to places where women travelers were rare, and until well after her retirement. Most often joined by her dear friend Josie, Amelia spent time in Montreal, Victoria, Costa Rica, Argentina, Australia, Mexico, Hong Kong, Thailand, and other countries in Asia, Hawaii, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Nevada, California, Washington DC, many trips to her birth country Poland and throughout Europe over decades of travel.

Amelia adored visits from and to her family in Calgary over the years and was cherished by her many nieces and nephews. Fondly known as “Ciocia Mela”, she held a place of honour in the family as the wise, worldly and elegant aunt matriarch, comporting herself with dignity, grace and a well-turned heel; yet whose twinkling eye, observant and witty humour, and thorough enjoyment of a good laugh endeared one and all.

At the age of 93, Amelia relocated to Calgary, to be nearer to family. As always, she remained living independently in an apartment of her own - walking to the grocery store or her favourite nearby shops on her own until her final days. She relished every visit and outing and was likewise much appreciated for her love of an hours-long phone call.

Amelia’s was truly a life well lived. Her presence enriched the life of all those she knew whether little or well, an example and inspiration for all those who hold a place for her in their heart.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 11:00 am at Our Lady Queen Of Peace Polish Catholic Church (2111 Uxbridge Dr NW, Calgary, AB). A Reception and Tea will be held at the church following interment at Queens Park Cemetery.
